About the Position

Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: RN Specialty: Med-Surg Colorectal Telemetry Duration: 6 Weeks Shift: Night Shift Hours per Shift: 12 Hours Experience: Minimum 2 years License: Required Certifications: BLS, ACLS Must-Have: Basic Life Support (BLS) certification Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification Experience in medical/surgical nursing Description: This unit provides care for patients with colorectal conditions, including colorectal cancer and ileus. Patients recovering from associated surgical interventions are also cared for on this unit. Other common diagnoses include infections such as osteomyelitis, sepsis, and pneumonia. Nurse to patient ratios are 1:5 during the day shift and 1:6 during the night shift. Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) are utilized during the day shift. A charge nurse is present on each shift and typically takes an assignment. Patient care technicians (PCTs) are present with a ratio of 12-15 patients per PCT. Their duties include taking vitals, bathing, blood glucose monitoring, phlebotomy, and assisting with activities of daily living (ADLs). Nurses on this unit are expected to titrate drips, including amiodarone, heparin, insulin, and Cardizem. Respiratory therapy equipment includes High Flow and BiPAP devices used for less than 24 hours. Registered Nurses are expected to troubleshoot these devices but have no further detailed responsibilities specified. The unit uses tele monitors with virtual monitoring only; nurses are responsible for reading their own EKG strips each shift. Weekend work is required every other weekend or less frequently. Holiday work is assigned on a rotating basis. There is an on-call requirement, but this is used as a last resort specifically for travelers. Floating to other units is required.
