The bi‑weekly salary ranges from $2,674.40 (Cadets), $2,810.40 (Entry licensed officers) up to $3,355.20 (Lateral Officers with 5 years). Purpose Performs police patrol, investigation, traffic regulation, community services and related law‑enforcement activities. Supervision Received Works under the general supervision of the Community Services Lieutenant and the direct supervision of a Community Services Sergeant. Essentials Duties and Responsibilities Provide the highest quality of police service to improve the quality of life for the citizens of Deer Park with the highest regard for professionalism and ethics. Develop community relationships and identify and resolve public safety issues. Patrol officers are sworn to safeguard the lives and property of all persons and act within their bounds of authority and legality. Patrol officers are assigned an Interactive Patrol Beat and are responsible for problem solving and proactive policing of that geographic area. They develop information exchanges within the department and with neighborhood residents, create action plans to address neighborhood needs, and evaluate implementation. Uniform, vehicle and equipment accountability and maintenance, periodic checks of Interactive Patrol Beat businesses and residences, investigation of suspicious incidents and activities, answering calls for service, accident investigations, criminal investigations, emergency medical service–first responder calls, and documentation of evidence are performed as required. Officers may execute warrants, issue warnings, summons, and citations, testify in court, deter and detect potential law violators, and undertake follow‑up action on investigations and traffic complaints. Patrol officers are assigned to the Community Services Division and work 8‑hour shifts on a 24‑hour rotation schedule. They perform duties assigned by the Community Services Lieutenant and/or Sergeant. Other Duties Special assignments may include: Patrol, Detective, Warrant Officer, Crime Scene Investigator/Crime Lab Officer, School Resource Officer, Crime Prevention Officer, Recruiting Officer, SWAT, Hostage Negotiations, Honor Guard, Drug Recognition Expert, Accident Reconstructionist. Desired Minimum Qualifications United States Citizenship At least 21 years of age at the time of appointment Bachelor’s Degree from a college accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools or another comparable regional accrediting agency recognized by the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admission Officers, or one of the following exceptions: 60 college hours and a minimum two years of military service with an honorable discharge. Texas police officers; 60 college hours, a current TCOLE license and at least two years of experience as a full‑time certified peace officer from an agency comparable in size (or larger), complexity and duties as the Deer Park Police Department, or Out of state police officers; 60 college hours and a minimum of two years’ experience as a police officer from an agency comparable in size (or larger), complexity and duties as the Deer Park Police Department and the ability to obtain a TCOLE license prior to hiring. Essential hearing/vision No convictions for any felony, DWI, DUODA, assault involving family violence or any crime involving moral turpitude; no history of recurrent illegal drug or narcotic use; any involvement in the distribution of illegal substances may be grounds for disqualification Resident of the continental United States for a period sufficient to conduct a comprehensive background investigation; consideration may be given for military assignments overseas Pass background investigation Character and reputation must be of the highest order Proof of liability insurance A valid driver’s license not in jeopardy of suspension and no more than two moving traffic law convictions in the one year preceding application; overall driving record must reflect prudence and maturity Veterans must have an honorable discharge and not have been convicted in any court martial higher than a summary Pass preliminary interviews, a physical fitness test, a written vocabulary and reading comprehension test, a Police Candidate Interview Board, and a conditional job offer interview with the Chief of Police or designee Pass a polygraph examination Be able to effect a forcible arrest Pass a psychological evaluation by a licensed psychologist or psychiatrist Pass a medical examination, including a drug‑screening test Meet and/or exceed current licensing requirements for peace officers as established by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Some knowledge of modern law enforcement principles, procedures, techniques and equipment; some skill in operating the listed tools and equipment; ability to learn applicable laws, ordinances and department rules; ability to perform work requiring good physical condition; effective oral and written communication; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with peers and supervisors; exercising sound judgment; following instructions; meeting special requirements; and learning the city’s geography. Special Requirements 1.5‑mile run in 17 minutes 29 sit‑ups in 1 minute 22 push‑ups in 1 minute (modified form acceptable for females) 300‑meter run in 71 seconds Tools and Equipment Police car, police radio, radar gun, handgun and other weapons as required; baton, hand‑cuffs, PC and laptop computers and associated peripheral equipment. Physical Demands The job requires frequent sitting and talking; occasional standing, walking and use of hands; reaching, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling; and occasional lifting or moving more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. Reasonable accommodations may be made for disabilities. Work Environment Work is frequently performed outside in varying weather conditions. Employees may work near moving mechanical parts, in precarious places, with explosives, and may be exposed to wet/humid conditions, fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold or heat, and vibration.
