Shift: 2nd Shift, 3:30 PM – 12:00 AM

Job Summary

Schaffer Grinding is seeking an experienced Machine Operator Lead to oversee second-shift machining operations while performing hands-on manual grinding and machining duties. The ideal candidate will have experience operating manual surface grinders, Blanchard grinders, and/or milling machines, along with the ability to train operators, coordinate production schedules, and maintain high standards of quality and safety.

This is a temp-to-hire opportunity for a hands-on leader who can support daily shop operations, ensure production goals are met, and help maintain a productive and organized machine shop environment.

Candidates will initially train on first shift at the standard Machine Operator pay rate to learn the company's equipment, processes, and procedures before transitioning to second shift with Lead responsibilities and pay.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership and Production

• Oversee daily second-shift operations to ensure production schedules, quality standards, and safety procedures are followed.
• Train, coach, and support machine operators on proper machine setup, operation, and safety practices.
• Assign and prioritize jobs based on deadlines, production requirements, and machine availability.
• Monitor team performance and ensure operators follow company policies and quality expectations.
• Coordinate with first-shift leads and management to ensure smooth shift handoffs.
• Report equipment issues, safety concerns, and production challenges to management promptly.
• Immediately communicate any out-of-tolerance or nonconforming parts to Inspection and Plant Management.

Machine Operation

• Operate manual surface grinders, Blanchard grinders, and/or milling machines to machine and finish metal components.
• Set up machines and select appropriate grinding wheels, cutters, speeds, and feeds.
• Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, sketches, and job layouts.
• Inspect finished components using micrometers, calipers, height gauges, and other precision measuring instruments.
• Maintain tight tolerances, including ±0.001 inch or better, as required by specifications.
• Monitor machine performance and make necessary adjustments to maintain dimensional accuracy and surface finish.
• Complete production documentation, quality checks, and Shop Traveler Detail entries.
• Perform routine machine maintenance and maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required; technical training or apprenticeship preferred.
• Minimum of 3–5 years of hands-on experience operating manual surface grinders, Blanchard grinders, and/or milling machines.
• Previous experience as a lead operator, trainer, or supervisor preferred.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings.
• Proficiency with precision measuring tools, including micrometers and calipers.
• Strong understanding of manual machining techniques, grinding wheel selection, speeds, and feeds.
• Knowledge of metal materials, particularly steel, tool steel, and aluminum.
• Ability to maintain tight machining tolerances and meet quality requirements.
• Strong leadership, communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to prioritize multiple jobs and support a team in a production environment.
• Must be willing to train on first shift before transitioning to second shift.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, stoop, and reach for extended periods.
• Ability to lift, carry, and move materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to safely use ladders or step ladders when needed.
• Good manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination.

• Follow all company safety procedures and requirements for operating machinery.
• Maintain a clean and organized work area.
• Report equipment malfunctions, unsafe conditions, and quality concerns promptly.
• Comply with company drug and alcohol policies and any applicable workplace safety requirements.
