Today, Colonial Williamsburg is the largest living history museum in the U.S. The Historic Area is the 301-acre restored colonial capital with 89 original buildings and 525 buildings reconstructed to how they appeared in the 18th century through extensive archaeological, architectural, and documentary research. The Historic Area is staffed by highly trained, historically dressed interpreters and expert tradespeople who bring the 18th century to life. The Foundation also owns and operates two world-class museums, the DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum, and the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum, The Bob and Marion Wilson Teacher Institute, and a renowned research library, the John D Rockefeller Jr Library.

Additionally, Colonial Williamsburg is home to five world class accommodations at the Williamsburg Inn, Williamsburg Lodge Autograph Collection, the Griffin Hotel, the Williamsburg Woodlands Hotels and Suites and the unique Colonial Houses in the Historical Area. Visitors may also indulge in food and drink at our many on-site restaurants and taverns that blend a historically inspired dining experience with today’s evolved tastes. About the Position:

The Public Safety Patrol Sergeant is an Armed Special Conservator of the Peace that has a duty to uphold and enforce the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia and the ordinances of the City of Williamsburg. Patrol Sergeants patrol all Colonial Williamsburg Foundation properties to protect exhibits; to assist employees, guests, and contractors; act as shift supervisor in the absence of the Master Sergeant; and to respond to emergency situations and calls for service in a timely and efficient manner.

Main Duties Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

1. Perform routine patrol activities to include, but not limited to: · Perform all duties required as a Special Conservator of the Peace § 19.2-13

· Conduct routine patrols and inspections of all Colonial Williamsburg buildings, grounds, parking lots, etc., including but not limited to the art museums, historic area properties, resorts, golf courses, restaurants, retail establishments, outlying properties, etc.

· Conduct regular foot, bicycle, or vehicle patrols to increase visibility, accessibility, and approachability within the community.

· Monitor safety conditions, document and record unusual conditions, situations, or events, and provide timely and accurate information as well as any deficiencies to management.

· Detection and preliminary investigation of crimes/unusual activities, which may include surveillance of individuals, vehicles or locations; interviewing victims, suspects, and witnesses; identification and collection of property and evidence; and documenting and reporting findings to the supervisor in charge of the shift.

· In the absence of the Master Sergeant, supervise the daily activities of Public Safety Patrol Officers who are assigned to CWC properties.

· In the event of an emergency and absence of the Master Sergeant: supervise, coordinate, and manage the department’s response to the emergency.

· Conduct security assessments of foundation properties to identify vulnerabilities and report findings to the Director of Public Safety.

2. Perform communications activities in the Communications Center which includes but not limited to:

· Receive, analyze, and prioritize emergency and non-emergency calls for service via telephone and in person; obtain necessary information and dispatching units or mutual aid emergency response as needed.

· Receive and acknowledge radio transmission of units and exchange information as necessary via radio. · Monitor fire, burglar, and duress alarm systems. · Monitor access control systems and CCTV.

· Log all calls, building access information, and complete emergency notifications as required.

· Monitor NOAA weather radio and make appropriate emergency notifications as required.

· Answers telephone; receives and/or refers inquiries and transmits to appropriate personnel.

· Assigns reports to field officers and contacts

· Inspect equipment at beginning of shift to ensure proper operation; report computer and equipment malfunctions and/or problems.

· Read logs from previous shifts.

3. Conduct follow-up investigations as required for crimes/unusual activities, and document investigative actions in accordance with department policy.

4. Conduct breath alcohol tests and controlled substance tests as needed.

5. Reviews activity/ incident reports from subordinates when in charge of the shift.

6. Secure, manage, and investigate traffic accidents scenes and hazardous roadway conditions

7. Act as the designated agent of CWF/CWC management in an emergency and assist with coordinating with the outside emergency response agencies until relieved by a senior manager. 8. Maintain order/mediate disputes and quell disturbances.

9. Monitor and provide emergency assistance to the public to include administering first aid, CPR, and use of AED, or moving/assisting incapacitated individuals

10. Enforce Foundation rules and regulations

11. Control access to restricted areas, when necessary.

12. Relieve communications operators, as required, by becoming familiar with all alarm monitoring systems, communications equipment, logs, records, and CAD system.

13. Escort employees and guests as needed.

14. Conduct background investigations for job positions in the Public Safety Department and make recommendations regarding a candidate's suitability for hire.

15. Setup crowd/traffic/parking control barriers/equipment.

16. Maintain open communications to develop relationships and direct partnerships between employees, guests, and residents to reduce the potential for crime.

17. Develop lesson plans and conduct training for Public Safety staff and Colonial Williamsburg employees.

18. Maintain scheduling for assigned shift.

19. Maintain proficiency in department policies, legal updates, and best practices to ensure training reflects current standards.

20. Assist in developing and updating training materials, scenarios, and evaluation tools as needed.

21. As an essential employee, must be able to report to work/stay at work during poor weather, storm events, and/or emergency conditions.

Required Education and Experience

· Must have completed high school/GED plus two years of experience as a CWF Public Safety Patrol Officer or one year of experience as a CWF Public Safety Corporal.

· Must have excellent public contact skills, including the ability to deal with people under stressful circumstances.

· Must have excellent communications skills.

· Must be able to read, write and prepare reports using a computer.

· Must be able to exercise sound judgment under stress.

· Must have completed high school/GED plus two years of experience within CWF Public Safety Department, or equivalent.

· Must not have a history of criminal convictions, except minor traffic violations.

· Must be able to qualify annually in CPR, first aid and the use of an AED.

· Must be able to work irregular/extended work hours (including frequently fluctuating work hours and rotating shift work).

· Must be able to work holidays, evenings, and weekends.

· Must have thorough knowledge of the CWF’s public safety operations.

· Must have a thorough understanding of the CWF’s electronic security and fire alarm systems.

· Must have a full working knowledge of the Code of Virginia and the ordinances of the City of Williamsburg.

· Must have a full working knowledge of the CWC bargaining unit’s rights.

· Must be able to secure bonding and professional liability insurance to be an armed Special Conservator of the Peace for the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation.

· Must qualify semiannually on an approved firearms proficiency course.

· Must have proven leadership ability.

· Must be able to pass a physical examination that includes: walking, running, or bicycling; tests for upper body strength; and tests for flexibility.

· Must pass pre-employment substance abuse testing and is subject to random alcohol and controlled substance testing.

Must possess a valid Commonwealth of Virginia driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record based on The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation’s criteria .

· Must be able to provide a 5-year Motor Vehicle Record prior to employment

· Must be at least 21 years of age · May not have more than 1 moving violation or at fault accident within 12 months

· May not have more than 2 moving violations or at fault accidents within 36 months May not have any serious motor vehicle violations including but not limited to excessive speeding, reckless driving, DUI/DWI, suspended or revoked license, etc. Preferred Qualifications

· Completion of an accredited Police Academy. Two years of college coursework in Police Science or a related subject, prior supervisory/leadership experience, and prior law enforcement experience.

Compensation Disclaimer : The compensation listed below for this position represents the anticipated hiring range and is provided in accordance with Virginia pay transparency requirements. Actual compensation will be determined based on factors such as the selected candidate’s skills, qualifications, experience, education, certifications, internal equity, and the specific requirements of the role.
