TDA - RG 4 - Intern - Field Operations (Two Vacancies Available)

Intern – Field Operations The Texas Department of Agriculture is seeking two Temporary Interns for field operations in San Antonio. Primary Responsibilities Conduct surveys for pests in pastures and fields. Inspect agricultural shipments at road stations for pests, diseases and enforce quarantine requirements. Inspect nursery plants, trees and shrubs for disease and insects. Inspect nursery stock and agricultural commodities for quarantine compliance and issue phytosanitary certificates. Inspect pesticide licensees to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations. Monitor and enforce quarantines for pests such as sweet potato weevil, fire ant, Japanese beetle, gypsy moth, etc. Draw samples of pesticides for official analyses. Collect and remit licensing and late fees. Issue stop‑sale orders, notices of seizure inspections and certificates for quarantine compliance. Provide education on pesticide use to producers, farm laborers, schools, medical and emergency staff. Conduct compliance inspections of pesticide dealers’ records and observe pesticide use. Collect and ship food commodity samples for the food safety program. Inspect records for structural pest control businesses. Complete detailed inspection reports, travel vouchers and mileage reports, and other weekly and monthly reports. Follow all TDA policies and procedures. Perform other duties as assigned. Requirements Enrollment in an accredited college, university, or graduate program, or recent graduate with a minimum GPA of 3.0. Completion of at least 30 credit hours. Eligibility to travel up to 75% of the work period in the assigned area. Valid Texas driver’s license with an acceptable driving record. Preferred Qualifications Coursework in Agriculture or related field. Computer and office equipment skills; customer service experience. Record‑keeping, filing, and report preparation skills. Effective verbal and written communication; sound judgment and discretion. Physical Requirements & Working Conditions Work outdoors with exposure to extreme temperatures and variable weather conditions. Perform extensive moving, walking, standing, kneeling, stooping, bending, and lifting up to 50 pounds. Operate heavy equipment or machinery, handle hazardous and/or flammable materials, and wear protective clothing. Travel up to 75% of the time, including occasional overnight stays.
