Astronomy Instructor, Temporary, Part-Time Pool - AMENDED Position summary: The City College of San Francisco Astronomy Department will hire a temporary, part‑time instructor to teach a mix of astronomy courses and support department outreach and curriculum development. This role is part of a one‑year hiring pool. Responsibilities Teach a mix of astronomy courses across the curriculum. Teach day, evening, Saturday or other site courses as required. Hold office hours and be available to assist and advise students at convenient times. Participate in student mentoring, service learning and community outreach activities. Participate in revising and updating the astronomy curriculum. Participate in developing new astronomy courses. Support and engage in culturally responsive, inclusive, and anti‑racist practices related to student success and equity gaps. Participate in ongoing training on diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti‑racism. Perform other related duties as assigned by the supervisor. Minimum Qualifications Demonstrated knowledge, skills and abilities to work with a diverse student body including students with disabilities, the LGBTQ+ community and various socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds. Earned Master’s Degree in Physics, Astronomy or Astrophysics from an accredited institution; or equivalent. Alternatively, earned Bachelor’s Degree in Physics or Astronomy from an accredited institution and earned a Master’s Degree in Engineering, Mathematics, Meteorology or Geophysics from an accredited institution; or equivalent. Alternatively, earned Master’s Degree in the interdisciplinary area of Planetary Science or Astrobiology from an accredited institution; or equivalent. Alternatively, earned Master’s Degree in Geology, Geochemistry or Microbiology from an accredited institution and completed upper‑division or graduate coursework in Astronomy, Astrophysics, Planetary Science or Astrobiology; or equivalent. Optionally, hold a fully‑satisfied California Community College Instructor Credential in Astronomy or related field (no longer issued after July 1 1990). Desirable Qualifications Master’s Degree or higher in Astronomy or Astrophysics. At least two years of teaching introductory astronomy at the post‑secondary level. At least two years of teaching astronomy laboratory classes at the post‑secondary level. Familiarity with online education and multimedia design. Familiarity with astronomical image‑processing software and/or astrophotography. Experience teaching astronomy in non‑academic settings such as planetaria or public lectures. Experience with observatory operations and maintenance. Demonstrated breadth of academic achievement in astronomy and/or astrophysics. Evidence of instruction at the university or college level using culturally responsive pedagogy. Commitment to addressing inequities in higher education and supporting historically minoritized and disproportionately impacted students.
