Legal Director, Payments
Jobtailor
- Advise Payments Product and Engineering teams from ideation through launch and ongoing operation
- Partner with Product, Engineering, Risk, Compliance, and Operations on product requirements, user experiences, funds flows, and technical architecture
- Translate complex payments laws and regulatory requirements into actionable product guidance
- Develop practical legal solutions that enable innovation while managing risk
- Advise on payments products, features, and experiences at global scale
- Build expertise across payment processing, acquiring, card networks, payouts, stored value, wallets, and emerging payment methods
- Develop frameworks, playbooks, and product review processes
- Collaborate with Product, Engineering, Compliance, Risk, Privacy, Operations, and Legal teams worldwide
Requirements
- J.D. from an accredited law school
- Active license to practice law in at least one U.S. state
- 10+ years of relevant legal experience
- Significant payments counseling experience with fintechs, financial services, and/or technology companies
- Experience partnering directly with Product and Engineering teams throughout the product lifecycle
- Deep knowledge of the payments ecosystem and applicable legal and regulatory frameworks
- Familiarity with money transmission, electronic funds transfers, consumer protection, card network rules, bank payments, financial crime, sanctions requirements, and related laws and industry rules
- Ability to understand product requirements, user journeys, technical systems, and funds flows
- Excellent judgment in novel legal questions
- Practical, solutions-oriented mindset
- Ability to communicate complex legal concepts plainly
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and operate with autonomy
- Ability to work comfortably with ambiguity and a bias for action
