Summary: Queens University of Charlotte is seeking an Athletics Academic Advisor to support the academic success, retention, and degree completion of student-athletes. Reporting to the Director of Athletic Academic Success, this position provides academic advising, monitors academic and degree progress, supports NCAA and institutional eligibility requirements, and collaborates with campus partners, coaches, faculty, and staff to promote student-athlete success.
This position is exempt from provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and is not eligible to earn overtime pay or compensatory time off for additional hours worked. This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include:
- Provide academic advising and guidance to student-athletes regarding course selection, degree requirements, academic planning, and eligibility requirements.
- Monitor individual and team academic progress, degree completion, and academic performance, identifying areas of concern and implementing appropriate interventions.
- Provide supplemental advising related to major exploration, academic requirements, campus resources, institutional policies, and academic planning.
- Conduct outreach and provide individualized support to student-athletes experiencing academic difficulty, including early academic warnings, midterm concerns, or academic probation.
- Collaborate with primary academic advisors, faculty, and campus partners to address academic concerns and connect student-athletes with appropriate resources and support.
- Communicate regularly with coaches regarding the academic progress and needs of assigned teams, including providing weekly and/or bi-weekly grade reports.
- Monitor and track student-athlete eligibility in collaboration with the Registrar’s Office, compliance personnel, admissions, and academic advisors.
- Maintain current knowledge of NCAA regulations, conference requirements, institutional policies, admissions requirements, transfer requirements, academic programs, course changes, and university deadlines.
- Assist with the administration and documentation of student-athlete eligibility requirements and the University Absence Policy for student-athletes traveling for competition.
- Maintain accurate, confidential student records and materials in accordance with FERPA and university policies.
- Assist with transition and orientation programming for new student-athletes to support their successful transition to the academic environment at Queens.
- Provide academic presentations and information to prospective student-athletes and their families during the recruitment process.
- Assist with student-athlete development initiatives addressing academic, career, personal, and professional development.
- Serve as a liaison between Athletics and academic departments to facilitate communication and support student-athlete success.
- Work collaboratively with members of the Center for Student Success on initiatives that support student retention, academic achievement, and degree completion.
- Provide mentoring and support to student-athletes as they navigate academic and collegiate experiences.
- Participate in professional development opportunities and remain current on best practices and emerging trends in academic advising and student-athlete development.
- Participate in department and university activities and perform other duties as assigned.
Non-Essential Duties
- Other duties may be assigned as needed to achieve department and university goals.
Experience, Knowledge and Skills Required
- One to two years of experience advising NCAA Division I student-athletes or equivalent experience in academic advising, student success, or higher education.
- Knowledge of academic advising practices and student-athlete eligibility requirements.
- Strong written, verbal, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and maintain accurate records.
- Ability to build effective working relationships with student-athletes, coaches, faculty, staff, and campus partners.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with students from diverse backgrounds and experiences.
- Ability to handle confidential information with discretion and professionalism.
- Strong commitment to student success, retention, and degree completion.
- Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree in higher education administration, counseling, student affairs, academic advising, or a related field preferred. Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
