Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS)

The Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) is responsible for performing professional laboratory services that support regulatory compliance, quality assurance, public health initiatives, and laboratory operations. The CLS applies advanced scientific knowledge and technical expertise to analyze laboratory data, evaluate testing procedures, ensure compliance with applicable regulations, and support clinical and public health laboratory programs. This position requires a California Clinical Laboratory Scientist license and experience in clinical or public health laboratory environments. The successful candidate will contribute to laboratory inspections, consultation activities, quality improvement efforts, and technical evaluations while maintaining the highest standards of laboratory practice.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform complex laboratory testing, analysis, and interpretation of clinical and public health specimens.
• Ensure compliance with Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA), state regulations, and laboratory accreditation standards.
• Conduct laboratory inspections, assessments, and evaluations of laboratory operations.
• Review laboratory procedures, quality assurance programs, and testing methodologies.
• Provide technical consultation and guidance to laboratory personnel and healthcare professionals.
• Evaluate laboratory performance and recommend corrective actions when necessary.
• Assist with regulatory compliance activities and documentation.
• Participate in quality improvement and patient safety initiatives.
• Prepare reports, maintain accurate records, and document findings.
• Collaborate with laboratory leadership, public health officials, and healthcare providers.
• Support emergency response activities and public health investigations when required.
• Maintain current knowledge of laboratory science advancements, regulations, and best practices.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, Biology, Chemistry, or a related scientific field.
• Active California Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) License (Generalist or Specialist).
• Minimum three (3) years of experience in clinical laboratory science, public health laboratory services, laboratory supervision, laboratory consultation, or related technical laboratory functions.
• Strong knowledge of laboratory regulations, quality systems, and testing methodologies.
• Experience interpreting laboratory results and maintaining quality control standards.
• Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience conducting laboratory inspections or regulatory compliance reviews.
• Experience supervising laboratory personnel or serving in a laboratory leadership role.
• Public health laboratory experience.
• Knowledge of CLIA, CAP, and state laboratory regulations.
• Experience developing laboratory policies, procedures, and quality assurance programs.

Work Environment

• Clinical laboratory, public health laboratory, or regulatory inspection setting.
• May require travel to laboratory facilities for inspections, consultations, or compliance reviews.
