Athletic Director

Position Athletic Director – Anticipated Start Date: November 1, 2026 Work Calendar: 42 weeks Starting Salary: $87,380 – Kentwood Public Schools offers competitive salary and benefits, commensurate with experience. Position Purpose Under the direction of the building principal, the Athletic Director works as part of the Athletic Department to provide visionary leadership, organization, supervision, and administration of the district's interscholastic athletic program. The Athletic Director is responsible for ensuring that all athletic programs promote academic achievement, student development, sportsmanship, equity, compliance, safety, and community engagement while aligning with the mission and expectations of Kentwood Public Schools. Essential Job Functions Provides leadership, supervision, and evaluation of all interscholastic athletic programs and activities. Assists in the recruitment, hiring, mentoring, supervision, and evaluation of all coaching personnel and teachers. Develops and maintains a high-quality athletic culture focused on academics, character, equity, sportsmanship, and student-athlete success. Ensures compliance with all MHSAA regulations, district policies, TitleIX requirements, and applicable state and federal laws. Serves as the district representative to the MHSAA, OK Conference, and other athletic organizations. Coordinates athletic scheduling, facilities usage, transportation, officials, contest management, and event supervision. Oversees athletic budgets, purchasing, inventory, fundraising oversight, and financial accountability for the athletic department. Collaborates with building and district administration regarding student eligibility, safety, risk management, and athletic programming. Develops and implements professional expectations, training, and evaluation systems for coaching staff. Oversees supervision and management of athletic facilities, equipment, and event operations. Coordinates communication with students, families, coaches, staff, boosters, media, and community stakeholders. Supports the promotion and recognition of student-athletes and athletic programs. Establishes expectations for academic accountability and student-athlete conduct. Assists with long-range planning for athletic program growth, facility improvements, and program development. Maintains visibility and presence at athletic contests, school events, and community functions. Performs other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or designee. Supervises all head coaches and athletic department personnel. Oversees the evaluation and professional growth of coaching staff. Provides leadership for assistant coaches, game management personnel, and support staff. Addresses concerns, conflicts, and disciplinary matters involving athletic programs in collaboration with administration and Human Resources. Regular, reliable, and punctual attendance. Additional Duties Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent. Equipment Uses standard office equipment such as personal computers, printer, copy and fax machines, and telephone. Travel Requirements Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Strong leadership and organizational skills. Commitment to student-centered decision making. Knowledge of current trends and best practices in athletic administration. Ability to manage large-scale athletic operations effectively. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work. Ability to work in an economically, culturally and racially diverse environment. Qualifications Master's Degree in education, supervision, athletic administration or other relevant field. Michigan School Administrator Certificate. Certified Athletic Administrator (CAA), Registered Athletic Administrator (RAA), or willingness to obtain certification strongly preferred. Five (5) years of successful experience as an Athletic Director or Assistant Athletic Director in college and/or secondary athletics preferred.
