About the Position

Job Opportunity – Pediatric Float Pool RN – Virginia

Start Date: October 26, 2026

Location: Central Virginia

Compensation: Details provided to qualified applicants

Schedule: Night shift, 36 or 48 hours per week, 13-week assignment. Every other weekend and every other holiday required. Block scheduling cannot be accommodated.

Highlights:

• Float pool position rotating through various pediatric units including PICU, NICU, Pediatric Med-Surg, Pediatric PACU, Pediatric ED boarders, and Postpartum/Mother-Baby
• Work with diverse pediatric populations from neonates to adolescents in a state-of-the-art regional transfer center
• Patient ratios vary by unit: PICU 1:2, NICU/ICN 1:2 or 1:3, Acute Pediatrics 1:4-5, Pediatric ED variable based on acuity
• Epic EMR system utilized throughout all units
• 13-week contract with up to 40 hours approved time off (no RTO permitted during first 2 weeks)
• 60 hours of orientation provided with comprehensive module training

Requirements:

• Active Virginia RN license (pending licenses accepted if in hand by Wednesday before start date)
• Minimum 2 years PICU experience required; NICU experience and comfort with general pediatrics required
• Epic charting system experience required
• Current certifications: BLS, NRP, ACLS, and PALS required
• Dr. Brown's Infant-Driven Feeding Certificate required (can submit with pending; $185 cost)
• Pediatric PACU experience highly preferred
• Previous NICU/PICU float pool experience preferred
• Previous travel nursing experience required
• Flu vaccine required (no exemptions); COVID-19 vaccine not required
• BSN preferred
• Nursys verification required with submission

Clinical Skills & Competencies:

• Proficiency in ventilator management, hemodynamic monitoring, and arterial line management
• Experience with administration of blood products, chemotherapy, and IV vasopressors
• Competent in central line/PICC line management and blood draws
• Skilled in BiPAP/CPAP management, high flow nasal cannula, and care of ventilated patients
• Ability to assist with/manage intubation and maintain acute airways
• Experience with chest tube management, tracheostomy care, and NG tube insertion/management
• Pediatric dosage calculation proficiency and medication administration including insulin pumps
• Ability to interpret arterial blood gases and dysrhythmias

Unit Environments:

NICU: 54-bed unit with intensive and intermediate care levels. Attend high-risk deliveries, provide neonatal resuscitation, and care for infants with extreme prematurity, congenital defects, surgical needs, and complex diagnoses. Advanced therapies include ECMO and hypothermia treatment.

PICU: 22-bed unit caring for patients newborn to 18 years with cardiac and medical illnesses, trauma injuries, transplantation, and surgical interventions. Manage patients requiring vasoactive infusions, mechanical ventilation, intracranial monitoring, ECMO, and ventricular assist devices.

Acute Pediatrics: 40-bed unit including 6 intermediate stepdown beds, epilepsy monitoring area, with primary services in Cardiology, Surgery, General Pediatric Medicine, and Hematology Oncology.

Pediatric Emergency Department: Dedicated 24/7 facility for patients ages 0-21 years, staffed by specialized pediatric emergency physicians and nurses.

Interdisciplinary Support:

• Collaborative team including IV Teams, Respiratory Services, Physical/Occupational Therapy, Child Life Specialists, Pharmacy, Social Services, Phlebotomy, Radiology, Lift Teams, and Rapid Response Teams

Important Policies:

• Must adhere to facility float policy and float within scope of practice as needed across all assigned units
• May be required to float to Labor & Delivery and Mother-Baby during staffing crises
• 50-mile travel restriction applies to certain units
• Travelers cannot exceed 365 total assignment days per separation policy
• 1-year separation plus leadership approval required for previous permanent staff/internal travelers
