Work Year: This is a temporary RN summer school position to fill in the needs of the CGESD's Migrant Program June 22nd - July 24: M-F, 0730-1430 (7 hours/day, 29 days total)
Pay: $49.00/hr
School nursing is a specialized practice of professional nursing that advances the well-being, academic success, and life-long achievement of students. The purpose of the nurse in schools is to facilitate positive student responses to normal development; promote health and safety; intervene with actual and potential health problems; provide case management services; and actively collaborate with others to build student and family capacity for adaptation, self-management, self-advocacy, and learning.
Job Qualifications, Licensure, Certification:
- Registered Nurse through the Oregon State Board of Nursing
- Possession of, or ability to qualify for, an Oregon School Nurse license through Teacher's Standard and Practices Commission (TSPC).
- Bachelor's Degree (preferred) Master's Degree (preferred) in Public Health, Nursing, Nutrition/Dietetics, Social Work, Health Education, Public Administration or other similar field or related professional experience
- Minimum of 1 year of public health, community, school or pediatric nursing (preferred)
- Certified in CPR or BLS
- Ability to communicate in Spanish (written and verbal) - preferred
- Classroom teaching experience - preferred
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Principles and practices underlying professional nursing.
- Principles and practices underlying the special field of school health.
- Knowledge of current trends in nursing and of literature in the fields of school health.
- Organization and administration of other cooperating agencies.
- State and local laws relating to health and social issues.
- Participate cooperatively in a program of school health nursing.
- Exercise professional judgment in making decisions.
- Communicate appropriately, collaboratively, and effectively with students, parents, administrators, other school personnel, health care providers, and community agencies.
- Demonstrate a genuine interest in the student population and its health needs.
- Organize a health office and manage time.
- Be a self-starter or self-motivated.
- Use a computer and various software applications.
- Maintain records confidentiality and comply with HIPPA and FERPA as needed.
Essential Job Functions:
- Promotes and protects the optimal health status of children ages 0-21
- Provides health assessments
- Obtains a health history
- Screens and evaluates findings of deficit in vision, hearing, growth, etc.
- Observes the child for development and health patterns in making nursing assessment.
- Identifies abnormal health findings.
- Develops and implements a student health plan
- Interprets the health status of students to parents and school personnel.
- Initiates referral to parents, school personnel or community health resources for intervention, remediation and follow through.
- Provides ongoing health counseling with students, parents, school personnel or health agencies.
- Utilizes existing health resources to provide appropriate care of students.
- Maintains, evaluates and interprets cumulative health data to accommodate individual needs of students
- Plans and implements school health management protocols
- Participates in home visits when indicated to assess the family needs as related to the child's health.
- Develops procedures and provides for emergency nursing management for injuries/illnesses.
- Promotes and assists in the control of communicable diseases.
- Provides health education and anticipatory guidance
- Provides direct health education, and health counseling to assist students and families in making decisions on health and lifestyles that affect health.
- Participates in health education directly and indirectly for the improvement of health by teaching persons to become more assertive health consumers and to assume greater responsibility for their own health.
- Serves as a resource person to the school staff members in health instruction.
- Coordinates school and community health activities and serves as a liaison health professional between the home, school and community.
- Acts as a resource person in promoting health careers.
- Engages in research and evaluation of school health services to act as a change agent for school health programs and nursing practices.
- Provides consultation in the formation of health policies, goals and objectives for the school district.
- Where applicable, participates in the IFSP and IEP plan development.
- Provides training in delegable duties to district staff
- Works with other nurses, district staff and community partners to provide in person and telehealth services.
- Follows record keeping protocols and procedures that comply with both HIPPA and FERPA as required
- Assist with the Medicaid claiming process and submit claiming information.

- Attend training related to professional growth to stay current on best practices.
