Correctional Classification Specialist

Exempt; full-time; 40 hours per week; varied schedule; full-benefits This professional position will manage inmates at the Frederick County Adult Detention Center (FCADC) or Frederick County Work Release Center (FCWRC) and/or defendants assigned to supervision under a Sheriff’s Office program in accordance with established processes and procedures by conducting intake activities, coordinating case needs, facilitating access to services, and maintaining required documentation across multiple operational systems, while also assisting with program participation, legal and administrative processes, and communication with internal and external partners to ensure continuity of services and compliance with applicable requirements, and maintaining records, preparing routine reports, and contributing to the implementation of procedures that support program operations and organizational objectives. Supervision is received from the Director of Community Services, or the Director and Assistant Director of Inmate Services. NOTE: The upper pay range reflects possible wage rates for internal County transfers and promotions, which are calculated per County policy. For external hires, offers are made at the base wage rate. RESPONSIBILITIES

Conduct intake interviews and enter required information into designated systems; record information into appropriate systems Provide orientation to individuals entering custody Oversee a caseload and coordinate broad case management needs Review and respond to requests and arrange accommodations when appropriate Refer individuals to available programs and participate in related reviews or proceedings; support recreational, educational, and other structured activities Provide general health education and related support services Coordinate pre-release processes and assist with planning for community re-entry Assist individuals with employment-related needs, schedules, and required program participation Document adjustment, compliance, and participation in required systems Maintain electronic records and statistical information and provide updates to leadership as needed Oversee inmate workers or program participants as assigned Serve as a notary as needed Provide information or testimony in legal settings when necessary Maintain statistical data and related reports for assigned programs; maintain financial and accounting records and coordinate deposits for assigned operations Collect and process program fees and reconcile payments Process court-related documentation such as expungements Serve as a liaison by managing communications, processing payments, and directing individuals to appropriate staff Conduct site visits and maintain contact with external supervisors or partners Scan and index records into designated systems Develop and implement procedures to support program operations Participate in required training and meetings Perform other related duties as required To perform this job successfully, an employee must be able to perform all essential functions satisfactorily. Bachelor’s degree in social work, criminal justice, criminology, sociology, psychology or a related field Minimum of 2 years of work experience in criminal justice, case management, social work, or psychology

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES

A successful incumbent operating in this role displays the following: Ability to be certified as a Maryland Certified Correctional Employee, either through current certification, re-certification of a prior certification (as approved by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission) or attending a Entry Level Training Academy within 12 months of hire Current METERS/CJIS and NCICcertifications from MD State Criminal Justice Information System within 1 year after hire Ability to obtain CPR and First Aid certifications within 1 year of hire Ability to become Current Notary for the State of Maryland within 6 months of hire Knowledge of principles, practices, and objectives of casework, sociology, and corrections; the attitudes and behavior of persons in an institution such as a Detention Center; interviewing and counseling techniques; the methods and objectives of correctional treatment programs; and legal rights of inmates Knowledge of the method, practices, and objectives of correctional treatment programs Knowledge of the needs and concerns of institutionalized persons, behavior and attitude of offenders, and systematic care Knowledge of the laws, regulations, requirements, and principles regarding corrections, parole and probation services as well as the local judicial system Leadership skills to effectively train, supervise and evaluate the work of others to include inmate workers Skill in accurately processing payments, reconciling accounts, and maintaining financial records. Skill in maintaining electronic records and using case-management or justice-system databases. Skill in the use of large-scale food preparation equipment and processes, to include proper food handling/food safety Ability to learn and effectively apply appropriate skills and techniques to oversee inmates and enforce facility rules and regulations Ability to successfully complete continuing education courses as needed in relation to safety issues, new equipment, regulations, etc. Ability to effectively administer and direct food service operations within strict compliance to Federal and State sanitary regulations as well as individual dietary requirements Ability to perform the required physical cooking duties and various techniques (cutting, chopping, washing dishes, putting dishes away, etc.)
