PSIA-AASI CENTRAL REGION
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
EMPLOYMENT TYPE: Full-Time, Year-Round
CLASSIFICATION: Salaried / Exempt
REPORTS TO: Board of Directors
LOCATION: Remote, within Central Region territory; regular travel required
Total target compensation: $100,000–$130,000, including a base salary of $75,000–$103,000, a performance bonus of up to 10% of base, and a healthcare stipend of up to $17,000.
Benefits: IRA-style retirement plan (up to 3% match), paid time off, and professional development.
Organization Overview
PSIA-AASI Central Region is the regional membership organization for snowsports professionals across the Midwest, serving approximately 3,300 individual members and 49 member schools on an annual operating budget of roughly $700,000. As a regional division of the Professional Ski Instructors of America (PSIA) and the American Association of Snowboard Instructors (AASI), Central exists so that snowsports instruction in the Region is better and the profession that delivers it is stronger. The organization strengthens instructors' competency, member schools' instruction and business success, and the long-term vitality of snowsports.
Central is a small, focused organization. The Executive Director works closely with a dedicated staff and an experienced network of education leaders, with finance and the membership system supported by PSIA-AASI National. It is a hands-on role with broad responsibility, spanning operations, finance, compliance, and education, and real influence across the Region.
The Region operates within the PSIA-AASI Policy Governance framework, with the Executive Director serving as the Board's primary link to operations and accountable for measurable progress toward the Board's Ends: meaningful certification, instruction that produces results, a growing and resilient professional pipeline, accessible and career-relevant education, and a professional presence that community members value.
The Opportunity
This is a chance to lead a respected regional organization at a meaningful moment: to build well-run operations, deepen relationships across a passionate community of snowsports professionals, and help shape how instruction is taught and certified across the Midwest. The next Executive Director will have real autonomy to strengthen the organization, an engaged and supportive Board, and the reward of advancing a profession that introduces people to a sport they love.
Position Summary
The Executive Director (ED) leads the day-to-day operations of PSIA-AASI Central Region and is its central point of communication and relationship management. This is a hands-on, operations-anchored role: the ED keeps the organization running reliably, communicates openly, builds strong relationships, and delegates work to the right people: staff, education leaders, the Education and Certification Manager, and external partners.
Under Policy Governance, the Board sets strategic direction and Ends; the ED translates them into reliable execution.
Above all, this role demands an exceptional communicator. Clear, consistent, and timely communication is the single most important quality the next ED must bring. The ED is also expected to empower and trust staff, deliver operational basics on time, advocate for Central with National, and listen and learn before introducing change.
The Region does not employ a Director of Education, so the ED carries education-program oversight directly in partnership with experienced discipline leaders. PSIA-AASI National provides day-to-day accounting and runs the membership database (AMS); the Executive Director manages that relationship and ensures it serves the Region's needs.
First-Year Priorities
In the first year, the Executive Director will focus on:
- Learning the organization, supporting the season already in motion, and establishing a dependable calendar and operating rhythm for the seasons ahead.
- Establishing reliable communication with staff, member schools, the Board, and National.
- Strengthening relationships with member schools across the Region.
- Delivering on commitments and initiatives already underway before introducing new ones.
Key Responsibilities
I. Communication & Stakeholder Engagement
- Communicate proactively, clearly, and consistently with staff, member schools, members, the Board, regional executive peers, and National, sharing the reasoning behind decisions, closing loops, and going directly to the people involved.
- Respond promptly, at a level of service that matches the urgency of the request.
- Communicate decisions, timelines, and changes early enough for stakeholders to plan and respond.
- Oversee member communications, the newsletter, Central Line magazine, website, and social media, executed by marketing/communications staff or vendors.
II. Member & Member-School Relationships
- Build and sustain genuine, ongoing relationships with the Region's individual members and its member schools, investing in them consistently and proactively.
- Lead Director Seminars and other member-school engagement, and serve as a responsive, visible point of contact across the territory, including proactive outreach to school directors and resort management.
- Grow and retain membership, including outreach to newer, younger, and unaffiliated instructors and to non-member schools, and strengthen members' sense of professional community and belonging.
- Use membership data and feedback to inform service and operational decisions.
III. Staff Leadership & Empowerment
- Hire, onboard, supervise, and evaluate Central's administrative staff and contractors, setting clear expectations and accountability.
- Lead by empowering: delegate authority (not just tasks), trust capable people, and build capacity, recognizing that Central's education staff are an experienced and intrinsically motivated team.
- Work directly with the education leadership, including Discipline Administrators, the Technical Team, Pod Leaders, and committees, to coordinate education delivery.
- Provide structure and support to the Education and Certification Manager, enabling staff and education leaders to own their functions.
- Treat all staff fairly and consistently, supporting every discipline equitably.
- Follow and uphold the PSIA-AASI Code of Conduct.
- Administer employment policies and coordinate HR in compliance with federal and multi-state labor laws.
IV. Operations & Administration
- Oversee day-to-day operations and deliver the basics on a dependable schedule, including publishing the season events calendar each year by mid-September.
- Plan ahead, follow through, and close loops; treat operational reliability as a foundational expectation.
- Access member and program data through the National-maintained Association Management System (AMS), and administer Central's own platforms (Basecamp, website/CMS, email, telecom).
- Manage office, storage, shipping, and vendor relationships, including contracts and renewals.
- Document key processes to ensure smooth continuity and shared institutional knowledge.
- Establish documented contingency plans for disruptions to key operations, staff, and resources.
V. Financial Oversight & Compliance
- Prepare and manage the annual budget and payroll, monitor cash flow, and read and interpret financial statements, partnering with the PSIA-AASI National accounting team, which provides day-to-day bookkeeping.
- Maintain internal controls and processes, and support audit preparation, tax filings, and nonprofit compliance, including the dual 501(c)(3)/501(c)(6) structure.
- Manage organizational insurance (general liability, directors & officers, auto, workers' compensation), including annual renewals, and maintain required coverage and business licensing in every state where the organization operates or employs staff.
- Identify and support revenue opportunities such as sponsorships, partnerships, and fee-based programming.
VI. Program Oversight: Education & Events
- Ensure education, certification, and event programs are delivered on schedule, aligned with PSIA-AASI national standards, and increasingly accessible, including local, digital, and hybrid options that reduce geographic and scheduling barriers.
- Support staffing, selection, onboarding, and evaluation for education staff in partnership with the Discipline Administrators and Technical Team, leaving day-to-day program management to those leaders.
- Maintain stable examiner and clinician capacity and support members' continuing education (CEU), so programs meet demand and events are not canceled for foreseeable shortages.
- Provide oversight, resources, and coordination to the Education and Certification Manager and education leadership.
- Monitor program metrics, participant feedback, and budget performance to guide improvement.
VII. Advocacy & National Alignment
- Represent and advocate for Central's interests in National discussions on alignment, pricing, and standards, championing the Region's members and schools while engaging constructively.
- Coordinate with PSIA-AASI National on programs, shared services, and affiliation-agreement commitments.
- Collaborate with regional executive peers to share best practices and advance the national membership community.
VIII. Governance & Board Support
- Serve as the Board's primary link to operations within the Policy Governance framework, providing regular monitoring reports on progress toward the Board's Ends and compliance with Executive Limitations.
- Support board and committee meetings, elections, and member notifications, and maintain governance documents.
- Honor existing Board-approved plans and commitments.
Qualifications
Required
- Exceptional communication skills. This is a threshold requirement: the ability to communicate transparently, deliver difficult news directly, and keep stakeholders informed.
- Proven relationship-building skills and comfort serving as a visible, approachable representative of an organization to members, schools, and partners.
- Demonstrated ability to lead by delegating and empowering staff or teams.
- Strong organizational and operational discipline: planning ahead, meeting deadlines, and following through on commitments.
- Hands-on financial management experience: budget preparation, cash-flow management, and the ability to read and interpret financial statements (working with internal or external accounting support).
- Working knowledge of the snowsports industry and PSIA-AASI's certification and education structure, or the ability to come up to speed quickly, sufficient to oversee education programs credibly without a dedicated education director.
- Minimum of five (5) years of experience in operations, administration, or organizational/association leadership, or an equivalent combination of education and directly relevant experience.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities across a seasonal operating environment, including some evening and weekend work during peak season.
- Candidates need not be current Central education staff, and deep examiner or clinician experience is not expected.
Preferred
- PSIA-AASI certification or active involvement in the snowsports education community.
- Adaptability and a growth mindset suited to a role that navigates ongoing National alignment, member-demographic, and technology change.
- Experience working within a Policy Governance (Carver) framework.
- Familiarity with multi-state employment, insurance, and licensing requirements.
- Experience supporting events or education program delivery.
- Candidates from adjacent sectors are encouraged to apply; formal nonprofit or association-management credentials (e.g., CAE) are welcome but not required.
Core Competencies
- Communication & Transparency
- Empowering Leadership & Delegation
- Operational Reliability & Follow-Through
- Relationship-Building & Trust
- Advocacy for Central
- Financial Management
- Adaptability & Growth Mindset
- Integrity & Sound Judgment
Working Conditions & Physical Requirements
This is a full-time, year-round, salaried position. Workload fluctuates seasonally, with peak demand during the winter snowsports season; some evening and weekend availability may be required during peak periods.
The role involves regular travel within the Central Region and to national PSIA-AASI events and industry conferences.
This is not a desk-only role. Central's events and clinics take place at ski and snowboard areas, where the Executive Director is regularly present with members and staff. Working outdoors in winter conditions and being on snow at snowsports base areas is an essential function of this position.
Application Process
PSIA-AASI Central Region is an equal opportunity employer and encourages applications from all qualified individuals regardless of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, or other protected status.
Interested candidates should submit the following as separate PDFs:
