Legal Administrative Specialist

Summary Albany, New York: $52,059 to $82,787 Per Year Binghamton, Plattsburgh, or Syracuse, New York: $50,460 to $80,243 Per Year Duties If selected for this position, you will join a well-respected team as a Legal Administrative Specialist/Case Manager responsible for providing a wide range of legal and administrative services to Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs) in a variety of routine to complex criminal and/or civil matters. Primary responsibilities include preparing and managing discovery, performing case development activities, assisting case teams with preparation for hearings and trials, and performing general administrative support duties. At the full performance level, primary responsibilities also include conducting legal research and writing. Responsibilities Serve as the primary support specialist for managing incoming and outgoing discovery in complex criminal and/or civil matters—coordinating with agency partners, reviewing materials for responsiveness, organizing voluminous materials for efficient review, preparing materials for production, and maintaining detailed indices of materials received and produced. Analyze and summarize evidentiary materials, including witness statements and documentary records, applying knowledge of the legal and factual issues in the Government’s case. Assist attorneys with depositions, hearings, and trial preparations, and during live court proceedings—maintaining witness lists and schedules, drafting subpoenas, assembling and managing exhibits, and operating trial presentation software. Conduct complex legal and factual research in legal and non‑legal databases—in support of civil and/or criminal cases—and draft a variety of legal documents such as discovery requests, routine motions, proposed orders, and notices. Conditions of Employment You must be a U.S. Citizen or National. Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory pre‑employment adjudication (fingerprint, credit, tax checks, drug testing). Continued employment is subject to favorable adjudication of a background investigation. You must be registered for Selective Service, if applicable. Selected candidates may be required to complete a one‑year probationary period. You must meet all qualification requirements upon the closing date of this announcement. Qualifications To be qualified at the GS‑07 level, you must meet at least ONE of the following conditions: specialized experience, superior academic achievement, graduate education, or a combination of specialized experience and graduate education. Specialized Experience: One (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS‑05 level in the Federal service or equivalent paid/non‑paid experience in the private or public sector. Experience must demonstrate a basic knowledge of litigative procedures and routine legal assistance assignments. Superior Academic Achievement: Possession of a Bachelor’s Degree (or expectation of completion within 9 months) and at least one of the following: top third of class, overall GPA ≥ 3.0 (or ≥ 3.0 in final two years), GPA ≥ 3.5 based on required courses, or membership in a national scholastic honor society. Graduate Education: One (1) full year of graduate‑level education in a related field (e.g., Criminal Justice, Paralegal Sciences, Law) leading to a Master’s degree or higher. Combination: A combination of specialized experience and successfully completed graduate education. To be qualified at the GS‑09 level, you must meet at least ONE of the following conditions: specialized experience, graduate education, or a combination of specialized experience and graduate education. Specialized Experience: One (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS‑07 level, with experience in discovery management, legal research, drafting routine legal documents, assisting in depositions and trials, and supporting attorneys during court proceedings. Graduate Education: One of the following: a Master’s or equivalent graduate degree, or two (2) full years of progressively higher‑level graduate education leading to such a degree. Combination: A combination of specialized experience and graduate education, with graduate education exceeding one full year. Interagency Career Transition Assistance Plan (ICTAP) ICTAP provides eligible displaced Federal competitive service employees with selection priority over other candidates. Eligibility requires notification of displacement, applying under the instructions in the announcement, and being found well‑qualified with a score of 85 or better on ranking criteria. Education All academic degrees and coursework must be completed at a college or university that has obtained accreditation or pre‑accreditation status from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used if shown comparable to that received in an accredited institution in the United States, with documentation in English or an English translation. Relocation Payment of relocation expenses will not be authorized. Salary The salary range for this position, including locality pay, is $52,059 to $82,787 per year for Albany, NY and $50,460 to $80,243 per year for Binghamton, Plattsburgh, or Syracuse, NY. Starting salary will also depend on the grade determined.
