Position Summary The Chief Estimator is responsible for managing the overall bid process for estimating steel projects that are assigned the Steel Division. They will be responsible for pursuing projects throughout their pre-proposal and proposal cycle. He or she is responsible for preparing detailed estimates of structural steel projects to include labor, equipment and material fabrication costs. They must have a good understanding of steel fabrication processes and materials, as well as experience in developing accurate cost estimates. They are responsible for maintaining BuildingConnected bid invitations, creating bid invites to vendors & suppliers, updating bid information and submitting proposal through BuldingConnected portal or other websites, as required. The Chief Estimator works closely with the Business Unit Leader, General Superintendent, Safety Department, and Quality Manager to develop bid strategies, resource availability, vendor relationships, safety requirements, quality requirement and project schedules, in order to provide a comprehensive estimate. He or she is responsible for updating the bid logs in Mondays.com, Steel Division folders, Bid Status log in excel as well as other logs or other related documents required to be maintained. Must have a good understanding of erection requirements and procedures to be able to provide accurate cost estimates associated with crane selection, rigging, bracing and general erection of structural and miscellaneous steel. The ability to travel to project sites for preconstruction and construction visits. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in engineering or construction management or a minimum of ten years’ experience in the construction industry, along with a minimum of five years of experience in commercial structural steel or miscellaneous metals. Communicates well both verbally and in writing, creates accurate and punctual reports, delivers presentations, shares information and ideas with others, has good listening skills. Ability to identify, assimilate and comprehend the critical elements of a situation to extract and interpret implications of courses of actions to attend to details of a problem. Effectiveness in planning and controlling work, motivating and developing subordinates, improving work methods and results, encouraging and supporting suggestions for work improvements, etc. Knowledge of design principles and engineering specifications related to structural steel. Proficiency in using software programs related to structural steel design and estimation. Similar to Tekla, E-Takeoff, Sage, Stack, etc. Ability to read and interpret blueprints, sketches, and other technical documents. Understanding of basic geometry and trigonometry. Ability to calculate loads and stresses on structural steel members. Knowledge of local building codes and regulations. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Excellent communication, problem solving, and organizational skills. Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines. Ability to work with other team members to ensure accuracy and efficiency in projects. Plans for and uses resources efficiently, always looks for ways to reduce costs. Is attentive to detail and accuracy, is committed to excellence, looks for improvements continuously, monitors quality levels, finds root cause of quality problems, owns/acts on quality problems. Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently. Experience in commercial structural steel projects. Experienced with Construction Scheduling. Estimators must be able to communicate effectively with other professionals involved in the project, such as architects and engineers, in order to ensure that the project is completed on budget and on time. By leveraging their knowledge of materials, labor costs and project management, structural steel estimators are essential for successful project completion.
