Role Summary : The Kitchen Manager is responsible for overseeing the daily food service operations of the facility, ensuring the safe handling, preparation, storage, and distribution of meals in accordance with agency standards and all applicable federal, state, and local regulations. This position monitors kitchen operations, maintains compliance with health and safety requirements, and supports the achievement of long-term facility and program goals through effective supervision, organization, and quality control.

Primary Job Responsibilities/Duties :

The job duties of the Kitchen Manager include, but are not necessarily limited to, the following:

• Supervise, train, and provide leadership to Food Service Workers and other food handling staff to ensure the efficient operation of kitchen services.
• Recruit, monitor, evaluate, and support Food Service Workers to ensure the successful performance of daily, weekly, and periodic responsibilities.
• Develop and manage staff schedules and work assignments to ensure adequate coverage and efficient meal service.
• Ensure all food is handled, prepared, served, and stored in accordance with established food safety standards, agency policies, and regulatory requirements.
• Receive and inspect deliveries of food, beverages, supplies, and related inventory, ensuring quality, accuracy, and proper storage.
• Review invoices and delivery documentation to verify that all ordered items are received and properly accounted for.
• Maintain accurate records of Food Protection Certificates, food handler certifications, and other required credentials to ensure regulatory compliance.
• Ensure staff maintain accurate meal service logs and all required food service documentation.
• Monitor compliance with agency standards regarding personal appearance, hygiene, sanitation, and uniform requirements.
• Ensure the safe and proper use, maintenance, and care of kitchen equipment, appliances, and related resources.
• Oversee cleaning and sanitation procedures, including sweeping, mopping, dishwashing, waste disposal, and the cleaning of food preparation and storage areas.
• Promote a positive and professional work environment and utilize effective conflict-resolution techniques to address staff concerns and operational issues.
• Ensure proper food disposal procedures and waste management practices are consistently followed.
• Assist in maintaining compliance with applicable city, state, and federal regulations, including Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requirements and health department standards.
• Oversee the proper storage, rotation, inventory control, and preservation of food, beverages, and kitchen supplies.
• Maintain food preparation areas, cooking stations, refrigerators, freezers, pantries, ovens, steam tables, warmers, and other kitchen facilities in a clean, safe, organized, and sanitary condition.
• Monitor kitchen operations to ensure quality, efficiency, safety, and adherence to agency standards.
• Perform additional duties as assigned to support the effective operation of the food service program and facility.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to walk, stand, kneel, crouch, and bend over.
• Ability to lift, carry, reach, and handle objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
• Ability to sit at a desk and work on a computer for prolonged periods.
• Ability to travel to different locations within New York City, as needed.

Work Environment / Schedule Requirements:

• May at times be required to work evenings, weekends, and/or holidays based on organizational needs, deadlines, or events.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma, and two (2) years of facility food handling.
• The following must be obtained by the end of your initial probation:
  • Food Protection Certificate (also known as a Food Handler's Certificate) from the NYC Health Academy.
  • First-Aid & Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation ("CPR") Certification.
• Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) preferred.
• Able to operate related equipment, tools, and materials used in the facility.
• Proven ability to work collaboratively well with diverse groups.
• Proven ability to handle multiple tasks effectively under pressure.
• Must be able to read, speak, write, and understand English for administrative purposes.
• Must pass a drug screening test to be appointed.
• This position may be subject to a series of checks before and/or after appointment.
