Corporate Loan Workout - Vice President

Role Description SMBC's Special Credit Group is looking for a VP to join the Corporate Product Team. The VP will monitor and manage a portfolio of assigned distressed Leveraged Finance and large corporate credits, manage credit cost, work with restructuring advisors, and handle reserves reporting and account‑related administrative matters. Salary range: $145,000.00 – $185,000.00. The role may also be eligible for an annual discretionary incentive award. SMBC offers a competitive portfolio of benefits to its employees. Role Objectives: Delivery Continuously monitor and manage existing transactions: analyze financial statements (including 13‑week cash flow reporting) and develop financial models to measure and monitor operating and financial performance; enforce financial covenants; determine ability to make debt service payments; analyze reasons for default/financial distress; assess turnaround potential and operating performance; evaluate repayment ability and enterprise valuations; assign borrower ratings, develop action plans, exposure management strategies, and handle account‑related administrative tasks. Review and process waivers and amendments; lead preparation of credit applications; manage the credit process with the Credit Department and back office; perform due diligence activities; negotiate documentation. Keep abreast of business and market trends that may affect deal/portfolio performance. Prepare periodic reports and information for senior management; proactively elevate credit risk, operational risk, and events to management when applicable. On a quarterly basis analyze and report reserve/write‑off calculations complying with US GAAP and JGAAP; assign proper accrual/non‑accrual status; manage credit cost forecasts. Prepare materials for regulator examinations and external and internal audits. Ensure compliance with all internal and external matters per banking regulations, bank policy, and best practices. Provide mentorship and guidance to deal team members; offer feedback and train junior members. Undertake ad hoc tasks and projects as required. Qualifications and Skills Deep understanding of Leveraged Finance and Corporate Finance. Proven analytical and financial modeling skills with experience reviewing and negotiating loan documentation. Proven credit analysis skills and track record; ability to identify key risk factors and solutions quickly. Knowledge of the regulatory framework in the region and full familiarity with internal policies and procedures. Excellent communication and presentation skills; proven ability to present and negotiate externally with clients, industry contacts, and internally with senior management and other departments. Ability to build and maintain a strong network of relationships across the Bank to facilitate communication and transaction execution. High attention to detail and ability to complete work accurately and within strict deadlines. Self‑driven, motivated, and takes personal ownership of assignments. 5+ years’ experience in leveraged finance or corporate finance credit underwriting or portfolio management at a leading financial institution. Experience negotiating term sheets and finance documentation. Education Required: BA/BS in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field. Preferred: MA/MS/MBA.
