Nursing Station Clerk/NSC Trainee - Full Time Day Shift (7:00 AM - 3:30 PM)

Position Summary Nursing Station Clerks 1 are assigned to either inpatient or outpatient units where there is daily contact with patients. This team member greets visitors and directs them to appropriate locations; answers telephones, performs data entry activities, maintains daily and clinical logs, prepares, updates, and maintains patient charts and files, fills out medication tickets and pharmacy requisitions, mails patient letters, and delivers supplies and records to an assigned unit. NY HELPS Program This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title may be filled via a non‑competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply. At this time, agencies may recruit and hire employees by making temporary appointments. In May 2024, if a temporary NY HELPS employee is satisfactorily performing in the position, the appointment will be changed from temporary pending Civil Service Commission Action to permanent non‑competitive and the official probationary period will begin. At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), it is expected employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non‑competitive employment status converted to competitive status without having to compete in an examination, and may then participate in any promotion examination for which they are qualified. Duties Orient patients and/or family to unit, providing general information regarding the room, unit and hospital and serve as a contact person to patients and families. Give information on patient condition within existing policies, and direct visitors to the appropriate locations. Process physicians' orders by recording written orders in charts, kardex, flag sheets, or directly into a computer file after review by a Registered Nurse; and by filling out medication tickets and pharmacy requisitions. Receive new admissions. Prepare and maintain patient charts, daily log and clinic log. Qualifications Eligible List Appointment : Candidates must be reachable on the Civil Service eligible list for Nursing Station Clerk 1. If you are on the list you may receive a canvass letter. You must complete and return it as instructed. Provisional Appointment : If there are three or more candidates willing to accept a position, a temporary provisional appointment may be considered. Provisional candidates must have: One year of full‑time clerical, secretarial, or patient care experience in a health care setting. Take the examination for Nursing Station Clerk 1 when it is next offered and be reachable on the resulting eligible list to maintain employment. 55b/c Appointment : This position is eligible for 55b/c designation and is subject to verification of applicant eligibility. Candidates must possess the minimum qualifications and a current 55b/c eligibility letter. Section 70.1 Transfer : Candidates must have one year of permanent competitive service in a title approved for transfer to Nursing Station Clerk 1. Pre‑Employment Requirements Successfully complete a pre‑employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance from Stony Brook Medicine's Employee Health Services. Complete an electronic reference check with a minimum of three professional references. Successfully complete a 4‑panel drug screen. Meet regulatory requirements for pre‑employment screenings. Provide a copy of any required New York State license(s)/certificate(s). Compensation Anticipated Pay Range: $36,232 – $38,235 per year. The salary range represents Stony Brook University Hospital’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. The specific salary offer will be based on the candidate’s validated years of comparable experience. Location pay for UUP, CSEA & PEF full‑time positions ($4,000).
