PSYCHIATRIC SOCIAL WORKER II / EMERGENCY APPOINTMENT HOMELESSNESS

Job Summary The County of Los Angeles Department of Public Health is seeking qualified candidates to fill emergency Psychiatric Social Worker II vacancies related to the homelessness crisis. Under the emergency order, applicants who meet the requirements may be hired for an initial period of up to 90 days, with opportunity for permanent County employment. This role will perform a wide variety of professional social work services in connection with the treatment of clients in need of mental health services, including psychotherapy, case management, crisis intervention, and collaboration with other health disciplines. Essential Job Functions Conduct interviews with individuals, families, and significant others to obtain comprehensive history. Assess client functioning in environmental settings. Develop Client Care Coordination Plans (CCCP) incorporating individual, group, family, or marital counseling, case management, and referrals. Determine duration of therapy, prioritization of problems, therapy methods, and modify treatment goals at intervals. Provide psychotherapy to individuals, groups, and families. Provide case management services to secure resources for clients. Assist clients and families in discussing reactions and attitudes concerning mental health and substance abuse disorders; encourage cooperative problem resolution. Work with families to gain acceptance and participation in treatment recommendations. Interview persons seeking psychiatric assistance on an emergency basis; use crisis intervention techniques to prevent hospitalization. Serve on a mental health emergency intervention team evaluating behavior and determining danger to self, others, or gravely disabled status. Initiate procedures for 72‑hour detention and schedule evaluation at a mental health clinic or referral to community agencies. Participate in multidisciplinary team conferences to evaluate client progress. Participate in social work student affiliate programs, providing case assignments and technical instruction, assessing student progress. Provide in‑service training to staff and participate in training programs for medical and allied health students. Instruct community agencies on mental health principles and treatment. Participate in or conduct research to improve therapeutic methods. Review treatment authorization requests and recommend approval or denial per contract requirements. Minimum Requirements Valid and active license as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker issued by the California Department of Consumer Affairs, Board of Behavioral Sciences. Valid California Class C driver license or ability to use alternative transportation for essential job functions. Physical Class II – Light, including light lifting up to 10 pounds and occasional bending or stooping.
