Staff Attorney

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Staff Attorney based in the United States.

This is a mission-driven legal opportunity focused on protecting the rights and futures of unaccompanied children navigating the U.S. immigration system.
You'll provide direct legal services to children in federal care, combining legal orientations, consultations, and individual representation.
The role offers meaningful courtroom and casework experience across a broad range of immigration matters.

Accountabilities

• Lead and deliver legal orientation presentations at shelters where unaccompanied children are located, explaining their rights, responsibilities, and options within the U.S. immigration system.
• Conduct individualized legal consultations with children in care, assess their circumstances, identify potential forms of relief, and explain available legal pathways in an age-appropriate and accessible manner.
• Provide direct legal representation to eligible unaccompanied children who remain in U.S. custody and have not departed the country.
• Represent clients in immigration court proceedings, including Master Calendar Hearings, Individual Hearings, motions, requests for continuances, motions to terminate, motions to change venue, and voluntary departure matters.
• Represent eligible clients in Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS), asylum, T visa, U visa, VAWA, adjustment of status, Temporary Protected Status (TPS), and Employment Authorization Document (EAD) matters.
• Conduct legal research, prepare pleadings and applications, develop case strategies, and ensure filings and representations meet applicable legal and procedural requirements.
• Maintain accurate case documentation and contribute to required data collection, analysis, reporting, and program records.
• Work closely with relevant program staff, shelters, service providers, and other stakeholders to coordinate legal services and support positive outcomes for clients.
• Protect sensitive and confidential information while demonstrating professionalism, cultural awareness, and respect for children and families from diverse backgrounds.
• Carry out additional related legal and program responsibilities as assigned by supervisors.

Requirements

• J.D. from an accredited law school.
• Active membership in good standing with a U.S. state bar.
• At least 2-3 years of professional immigration law experience.
• Prior experience working directly with children and/or youth.
• Demonstrated ability to represent individuals in immigration matters and navigate complex legal proceedings.
• Excellent legal research, writing, editing, analytical, and case-management skills.
• Strong organizational and project-management abilities, with the capacity to manage multiple cases, deadlines, and priorities effectively.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to explain complex legal concepts clearly and sensitively.
• High level of professionalism, discretion, confidentiality, and sound judgment.
• Demonstrated commitment to working respectfully with individuals from multicultural and diverse backgrounds.
• Experience representing individuals, particularly unaccompanied children, in removal proceedings is preferred.
• Spanish-language proficiency is preferred.
• Ability to work in an in-person environment and perform the essential functions of the position, with reasonable accommodations available where appropriate.
• Commitment to humanitarian service and protecting the legal rights and dignity of vulnerable populations.
