Teen Police & Fire Explorers: Volunteer & Internship Program

Community Volunteer Patrol (CVP) The CVP program encourages residents to get involved in local government by volunteering their time and supporting city departments, including the Sunrise Police Department. Volunteers provide administrative assistance, greet visitors, assist at special events, and conduct resident neighborhood patrols. Police Explorers The Law Enforcement Explorers Program is designed for teens and young adults (14‑21 years old) to experience lawful citizenship alongside certified Sunrise Police Officers. Participants complete a 56‑hour basic academy, a 6‑month probationary period, and weekly meetings that include uniform inspection and training seminars. After training, Explorers engage in community policing projects such as child fingerprinting, school safety seminars, crime prevention programs, traffic control, searches, and, for 16‑year‑olds and older, ride‑along patrol shifts (up to 11.5 hours). Eligibility: at least 14 years old (under 21), satisfactory grades, and a parent or guardian’s approval for those under 18. Fire Explorers The Fire Explorer program, available to young men and women aged 14‑18, offers weekly meetings that introduce basics of fire‑rescue service, CPR, first aid, firefighting techniques, hazardous material recognition, and advanced life support. Important Details About Our City’s Volunteer Program Volunteers do not need to live within Sunrise, but must be at least 15 years old. Applicants submit an online application and may be subject to background checks, depending on placement. Once selected, participants can enroll for free in the national President’s Volunteer Service Awards program. CVP members are eligible for special recognition and awards from the City for volunteer service hours. Visit the President’s Volunteer Service Awards website for program information and online enrollment at: Internship Opportunities The City offers internships in administration, finance, leisure services, urban planning, emergency management, engineering, and special projects. Interns may conduct research, technical/financial analysis, prepare written communications, critically review documents, engage residents, coordinate among departments, and manage projects. Hours: up to 26 hours per week (3 to 6 months). Internships may be paid or for credit. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Ability to perform research and prepare reports.
