Sr Shop Diesel Mechanic

Job Summary Sr. Shop Diesel Technician – responsible for performing licensed DOT inspections, preventive maintenance inspections, light and advanced repairs, advanced mechanical/hydraulic/electrical and electronic diagnostics, and other duties as assigned. Works in a shop environment and, occasionally, at customer locations. Must comply with all company policies and achieve high performance metrics. Duties Always follow and comply with safe operating practices and procedures. Independently determine parts required for each job and coordinate with the Shop Parts Department. Maintain a clean and safe work environment; assist in daily cleanup of tools, parts, and equipment. Apply knowledge gained through training or on‑the‑job experience to perform tasks and evaluate technical information. Work with Service Writer to assess customer needs, provide information or assistance, and resolve problems. Manage concurrent tasks, prioritizing work and time effectively. Act with integrity, demonstrate honesty, keep commitments and maintain confidentiality. Perform scheduled preventive maintenance (PM), DOT inspections, and follow‑up repairs on light, medium, and heavy‑duty vehicles in a shop environment. Occasionally travel and work at customer locations. Perform routine maintenance such as changing oil, checking batteries, and lubricating equipment. Use hand tools, precision instruments, diesel tools, welding equipment, lifts, and jacks. Document work on Repair Orders (RO) and upload pictures and findings using company devices or the Karmak application. Accurately complete DOT forms and all required documentation in a timely fashion. Maintain a high level of productivity and work within or close to standard repair times. Communicate with Shop Manager and support team to obtain approvals on repair estimates, retrieve purchase order numbers, and discuss RO findings. Perform all work in compliance with safety, health, environmental, OSHA, EPA, and DOT regulations. Participate in and complete all company‑required safety training. Maintain assigned service trucks, conduct safety checks and daily pre/post‑trip inspections. Perform minor adjustments and repairs on truck equipment – electrical/brake/cooling systems, starters/alternators, fan clutches, engine electronics, diesel steering systems, engines, transmissions (manual and automatic), clutches, differentials, etc. Adhere to company policies, processes, and procedures. Diagnose, adjust, and repair various truck equipment types using test instruments such as handheld computers and pressure gauges. Assist Shop Diesel Technicians I and I/II with diagnostics and parts procurement. Advise technicians on technical issues and make recommendations. Perform advanced diagnostics and triage of complicated repairs for technicians I/II. Requirements High School Diploma or GED and 5 years’ experience in a related field (alternative combinations accepted). Possess and supply a set of hand tools necessary to perform required job duties. Obtain Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification T8 (PMI) within 18 months. Must be at least 21 years old due to interstate operating authority commerce regulations. Skills & Abilities Understand new information for current and future problem‑solving and decision‑making. Ability to lift, bend, climb, stand, and walk for long periods; perform moderately heavy labor. Ability to perform repetitive tasks without tiring over long periods. Communicate information in a succinct and organized manner; engage in effective two‑way communication. Determine the type of tools and equipment needed for tasks. Accurately judge distance between objects. Use logic and reasoning to evaluate alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems.
