Occasional Position Overview
Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO) invites applications from current SUNO employees for an Academic Advisor in University College. This internal-only opportunity provides comprehensive academic advising and student-success coaching to first-time freshmen, continuing students, and transfer students who have earned 0-60 credit hours.
Reporting to the Director of University College, the Academic Advisor helps students select courses, understand degree requirements, identify academic interests, choose an appropriate major, overcome barriers, and remain on track for timely degree completion. The advisor collaborates with deans, department chairs, faculty, and student-support offices and may be housed within an assigned college or school.
Grant-Funded Position
This position is funded 100% through the federally funded Title III-B Strengthening Historically Black Colleges and Universities Program. Continued employment is contingent upon the availability of grant funding, programmatic needs, and satisfactory performance. The employee supports grant activities designed to improve student achievement, persistence, retention, and graduation.
Key Responsibilities
- Advise assigned first-time freshmen, continuing students, and transfer students with 0-60 earned credit hours regarding course selection, registration, course sequencing, degree requirements, and academic-plan development.
- Help students select educational pathways consistent with their abilities, interests, goals, and academic progress; provide current information regarding undergraduate curricula, University requirements, and student-support resources.
- Monitor assigned students throughout the semester; review progress, needs, degree requirements, and performance indicators; and document contacts and outcomes for institutional and Title III reporting.
- Review student-success data, identify academic or personal barriers, develop individualized action plans and interventions, and make timely referrals to tutoring, counseling, financial aid, accessibility, career, and other campus services.
- Interpret University policies and procedures and present academic information to students and families during orientation, registration, and transition programs.
- Build productive working relationships with deans, department chairs, faculty, and staff; communicate curriculum updates, registration needs, and student concerns.
- Review academic forms for completeness and accuracy, including course withdrawals, changes of major, academic appeals, and curriculum-related requests, and assist students with required processes.
- Plan and facilitate Keys to Success workshops on time management, procrastination, study strategies, note-taking, academic accountability, and related student-success topics.
- Maintain accurate advising notes, student records, tracking data, and reports using EAB Navigate, Banner, Microsoft Excel, and other institutional systems.
- Participate in recruitment, orientation, registration, external-relations, and student-engagement activities; assist other advisors with daily operations; prepare requested reports; and perform other related duties as assigned.
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in education, counseling, higher education, student affairs, psychology, business, social work, or a related field.
- Demonstrated ability to use information technology and information systems to deliver, monitor, document, and evaluate student programs and services.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with students, faculty, staff, administrators, families, and external partners.
- Master's degree in higher education, counseling, student affairs, educational leadership, or a related field.
- Prior experience in academic advising, student-success coaching, retention, first-year experience, or college student support.
- Experience using EAB Navigate, Banner, or comparable student-success and student-information systems.
- Knowledge of academic advising, student development, retention practices, and higher-education policies and procedures.
- Ability to work effectively and respectfully with students from varied backgrounds and respond appropriately to individual needs and cultural differences.
- Strong planning, workshop facilitation, case-management, organization, problem-solving, oral communication, and written communication skills.
- Knowledge of FERPA requirements and sound practices for protecting student confidentiality, with proficiency in Microsoft Office and student-information and advising systems.
- Ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment in evaluating academic records, interpreting established requirements, assessing student needs, and selecting individualized interventions and referrals within delegated authority.
