About This Job
Our mission is to ensure the physical, operational and financial integrity of the regional flood risk management system, in southeastern Louisiana as a defense against floods and storm surge from hurricanes. We accomplish this mission by working with local, regional, state and federal partners to plan, design, construct, operate and maintain projects that will reduce the probability and risk of flooding for the residents and businesses within our jurisdiction. The incumbent in this position performs responsible, commissioned and law enforcement duties in the prevention of crime and to protect life and property, while armed and uniformed. Supervision is from a police official of a higher level, i.e. Police Sergeant, Police Lieutenant, and/or Police Captain. Agency preferred qualification: The incumbent in this position is required to be POST certified.
Minimum Qualifications
Three years of law enforcement experience. EXPERIENCE SUBSTITUTION: Every 30 semester hours earned from an accredited college or university will substitute for one year of the required experience. The maximum substitution allowed is 60 semester hours which substitutes for two years of experience. Necessary special requirements: Applicants must be at least 18 years of age. Possession of a current Louisiana driver's license. Possession of an active Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification may be required. An applicant who has been convicted of a felony or who is under indictment on a felony charge will be disqualified until relief from the disabilities imposed by state and federal laws is granted.
Job Duties And Other Information
Job Duties:
- Investigate citizen complaints against police officers
- Conducts interviews of victims, witnesses, and suspects of criminal activity as well as interrogations when needed
- Works with federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies when assistance is needed on investigations
- Supervises, protects, and preserves crime scenes. This includes managing the collection of evidence at crime scenes
- Collect, preserve, and document evidence in accordance with legal and departmental standards.
- Prepare comprehensive investigative reports, affidavits, warrants, and case files.
- Analyze records, surveillance, digital evidence, and intelligence information.
- Coordinate with prosecutors, courts, and other law enforcement agencies regarding case preparation and testimony.
- Testify in court and administrative proceedings as required.
- Training includes, but is not limited to, firearms, first aid, impact weapons, proper police equipment usage, electrical weapons, investigative training, and any additional training that the department believes will enhance the officer's ability to perform his/her duties
Position-Specific Details:
Appointment Type: This appointment type can be filled as Probationary, Promotional, Lateral Transfer, Detail to Special Duty, or Job Appointment. Career Progression: This position does not participate in a Career Progression Group. Compensation: Full-time employees are eligible for a comprehensive benefits package, including participation in the state's retirement plan, health insurance, agency-paid short-term disability coverage, paid holidays, and paid annual and sick leave. Note: The Orleans Levee District is an emergency-oriented agency. Part of the mission is to protect the residents of Orleans Parish from tidal surge, wind-driven water and river flooding. In emergencies during Mississippi River flooding and Tropical Storm events, the incumbent will be on call and must report for duty if required, remaining on duty until released by the Appointing Authority.
