Bakery Counter Staff Manager

Job Details
Balthazar Bakery (NYC) is looking for a Counter Staff Manager to help run day-to-day operations of our retail bakery. This person leads the team on the floor — including counter service, cash handling, and product presentation — while ensuring company standards for cleanliness, safety, and customer experience are met every shift. Open availability preferred.

Key Responsibilities (including, but not limited to)

Leadership & Operations

• Manage, motivate, and delegate to staff to drive sales, efficiency, and exceptional service
• Oversee opening and closing procedures and ensure the team knows all required tasks
• Manage stock levels and make key stock control decisions
• Oversee workplace safety procedures and accurately document any incidents

Customer Service & Sales

• Greet customers with a welcoming attitude, answer questions about menu items or ingredients, and offer recommendations
• Ensure orders are taken accurately, items are counted and safely boxed/bagged, and payments (cash/card) are processed correctly
• Respond to customer complaints and comments professionally
• Handle phone orders, including special orders and deliveries

Merchandising & Display

• Maintain merchandising and displays throughout the retail space
• Restock cases and shelves throughout the day, rotate products for freshness, and ensure attractive visual presentation

Cash Handling

• Responsible for overall cash handling during your shift, including counting banks.

Cleanliness & Sanitation

• Maintain department cleaning and sanitation according to DOH standards
• Keep the counter, seating, customer areas, and sidewalk neat and presentable
• Clean and maintain equipment: espresso machine, coffee maker, refrigerator
• Keep supplies (baskets, spatulas, closets, cabinets, etc.) clean and organized

Other

• Perform other duties as assigned by management to support bakery operations

Qualifications & Skills

• Strong leadership and team management skills
• Upbeat, friendly, and clear verbal communication skills
• Ability to multitask and work quickly during busy rushes
• Comfort with cash handling, register operation, and calculating totals/change accurately
• Knowledge of DOH sanitation standards (or ability to learn quickly)
• At least 1 year of food service experience, bakery or coffee shop experience preferred
• Open availability strongly preferred

Physical Requirements (including, but not limited to)

• Must be able to stand, walk, and bend for extended periods (typically 8-hour shifts)
• Must be able to lift or carry up to 50 lbs. (trays of baked goods, supply boxes, etc.)
• Flexibility to work early mornings, weekends, and holidays
