Job Overview


The Manager, Materials is a critical leadership role responsible for overseeing all aspects of materials planning, inventory management, material flow, and supply chain execution within a high-velocity, make-to-order manufacturing environment. This position plays a key role in driving operational excellence through Lean Manufacturing principles, continuous improvement initiatives, and strategic inventory management practices. The successful candidate will lead a team focused on ensuring uninterrupted material availability, optimizing inventory performance, supporting customer delivery commitments, and driving cross-functional collaboration across operations, sourcing, and production.

Key Responsibilities

• Champion a strong safety culture by promoting safe work practices and ensuring compliance with company safety programs and OSHA regulations.
• Lead all material planning, inventory control, and replenishment activities to support production schedules and customer delivery requirements.
• Manage raw material procurement, inventory levels, and storage strategies utilizing SAP/MRP systems and Lean replenishment methods.
• Drive inventory performance through effective management of inventory turns, stock accuracy, supplier performance, and material availability.
• Develop and execute materials strategies that align with business objectives and plant operational goals.
• Partner with sourcing, operations, production, and other facilities to ensure effective material forecasting and planning.
• Oversee Kanban systems, material flow processes, reorder point management, and production floor replenishment strategies.
• Lead product lifecycle material planning, including new product introductions, engineering changes, and obsolescence reduction initiatives.
• Establish and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) related to inventory, delivery performance, materials availability, and customer service.
• Build and develop a high-performing team through coaching, mentoring, talent development, goal setting, and performance management.
• Foster a culture of continuous improvement, problem-solving, accountability, and operational excellence.
• Support Lean Manufacturing and Daily Management initiatives to improve efficiency, quality, and business performance.
• Collaborate cross-functionally to identify and implement process improvements that reduce waste and improve material flow across the value stream.
• Perform additional duties and special projects as assigned.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Materials Management, Supply Chain, Business, Operations, Engineering, or a related field preferred, or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
• 3+ years of experience in materials management, production planning, inventory control, or supply chain operations within a manufacturing environment.
• 3+ years of leadership or supervisory experience with responsibility for employee development and team performance.
• Experience working within Lean Manufacturing environments utilizing MRP systems and supplier management processes.
• Strong understanding of inventory management, material planning, forecasting, and manufacturing operations.
• Experience using ERP/MRP systems, preferably SAP.
• Strong analytical, organizational, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
• Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration abilities.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree (or international equivalent) in Materials Management, Supply Chain, Business, Operations Management, or a related discipline.
• APICS CPIM, CSCP, or similar supply chain certification.
• Experience implementing inventory control systems, including Kanban and pull-based replenishment methodologies.
• Advanced knowledge of Lean Manufacturing, Continuous Improvement, and inventory optimization practices.
• Experience supporting new product introductions and product lifecycle management.
• Experience with visual management systems and Daily Management disciplines.
• Background in high-mix, make-to-order, or fast-paced manufacturing environments.
