Primary Location North/Northwest Side-4015 North Ashland Avenue (Lake View High School) Overview Chicago Public Schools (CPS) is the third‑largest school district in the United States, serving over 330,000 students in more than 600 schools. The School Athletic Director reports to the Executive Director of CPS Sports Administration and the school administrator and is responsible for overseeing the development and implementation of a comprehensive high‑school athletics program. Responsibilities Administer all extra‑curricular athletic programs. Supervise licensed and non‑licensed staff, including Assistant Athletic Directors, coaches, trainers, and support staff. Maintain files and records required by policy, regulation, law and good practice (player record cards, Aspen‑eligibility, physicals, transfer paperwork, transportation requests, coaching certifications, etc.). Respond to information requests from OSA, IHSA, FOIA, Title IX, Law Department, colleges, and the press. Implement board policies and advise administration on regulatory matters related to athletics. Assess department needs through consultation with students, staff, and parents (equipment, budgeting, transportation, venue upgrades, technology). Evaluate extracurricular athletic programs and support long‑term planning, including adjusting program levels, meeting Title IX requirements, and hiring additional coaches or trainers as needed. Develop and update handbooks, brochures and policy manuals. Communicate program information to the school community via websites, emails, media and social media. Stay current on research, issues and regulations related to athletic programs (academic, racial, gender and socio‑economic issues). Develop a grade‑check system for student athletes and maintain eligibility reports and participation lists on a weekly basis. Develop and update team schedules for public viewing on all school platforms. Oversee transportation for all team travel. Develop a school safety plan for every home venue. Monitor and support academic performance of student‑athletes, oversee the ISP process for at‑risk athletes and develop academic support mechanisms. Direct and coordinate fiscal operations, engage in short‑ and long‑range fiscal planning, assist in preparing and implementing the school system budget, coordinate department purchasing and recommend capital improvements and negotiated contracts. Specify contract requirements, serve as consultant in the selection of supplies and materials, and supervise ticket sales and fund‑raising events. Administer receipt and disbursement of student activity funds, assist OSA with hiring and payment of coaching staff and supervise and guide the planning and execution of all parent volunteer organizations. Create schedules for all operations and activities within the department, issue timely announcements of events and deadlines, and schedule and pay officials, athletic trainers, ticket takers, announcers, clock operators and police for home contests. Hire, schedule and compensate lifeguards for all aquatic sports, arrange transportation for athletic contest participants, verify athlete eligibility for each contest and arrange details for visiting teams’ needs. Provide emergency health care and first aid treatment, arrange practice schedules for field, gymnasium and aquatics centers including summer programs and non‑school use of facilities. Manage contracts for every athletic contest, coordinate with CPS for stadium usage and with Chicago Park Districts for IGA agreements. Recruit, screen, interview, and recommend staff; conduct performance evaluations, ensure CPS and state certification compliance, and develop a coaching evaluation system. Support career development opportunities for coaches, monitor staff time, attendance and professional training. Investigate and address complaints regarding employee conduct or performance and respond to employee requests for information. Generate public relations materials, maintain a positive image of the department within the school and the community, plan and supervise an annual recognition program for school athletes, and keep records of athletic contest results and scholarship announcements. Organize departmental awards, coordinate special events (homecoming, senior days, award ceremonies, fundraisers) and supervise part‑time student help. Oversee the insurance program covering school athletes and complete incident reports for injuries. Work proactively to resolve conflicts and anticipate potential problems. Co‑ordinate the development, implementation, review and revision of the extra‑curricular athletic program and attend practices and games for evaluation and needs assessment. Enforce State and City policies on equal educational opportunity and develop an effective, comprehensive and equal opportunities athletic program for all male and female students. Assist coaches in the handling of day‑to‑day problems and resolve staff and coaching issues, provide support to coaches, and coordinate the development of disparities and policies. Manage and develop facilities, inspect buildings, grounds, machines and equipment, issue repair orders, enforce safety standards, maintain swimming pools and oversee repairs or replacements of defective parts. Procure space for teams outside CPS facilities, supervise departmental activities, coordinate public or special events and supervise ticket sales and fundraising. Establish and maintain Chicago residency, maintain vaccination or weekly COVID‑19 testing requirements, and comply with all employment conditions set by CPS. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university; Master’s degree and/or general administrative endorsement preferred. NIAAA Certified Athletic Administrator. Minimum of five (5) years of experience in sports program administration and/or interscholastic sports. Supervisory experience preferred. Ability to interact and communicate effectively with a variety of audiences. Ability to coordinate and manage all aspects of the athletic program, including financials. Ability to motivate student athletes and coaches. Ability to make rational decisions under stressful conditions. Proficiency using technology and applications, including Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), Google Suite and web content editing software. Other requirements: Non‑traditional schedule that includes evening and weekend hours based on school needs; hours may change seasonally. Conditions of Employment As a condition of employment with the Chicago Public Schools (CPS), employees are required to: Establish and maintain Chicago residency within six months of hire date and maintain residency throughout employment.
