Job Title: Welder – 1st Shift Job Description

This role focuses on MIG production welding on mild steel in the flat position within a clean, organized, and well-equipped fabrication shop. You will read and interpret blueprints, set up and operate welding equipment, and perform minor fabrication tasks to support production. The position is primarily MIG welding, with occasional opportunities to assist on TIG projects as needed.

Responsibilities

• Perform .045 MIG production welding on mild steel in the flat position according to established specifications and quality standards.

• Read, interpret, and work from blueprints to complete weldments accurately and efficiently.

• Set up welding equipment, including Lincoln welders, and ensure proper settings for each job.

• Use hand and power tools such as hammers and other shop tools to set up welds and perform fixture welding.

• Carry out minor duties outside of welding, including grinding, blasting, and operating a band saw to support fabrication work.

• Assist with occasional TIG welding projects as needed, following proper procedures and safety practices.

• Inspect welds for quality, accuracy, and conformance to specifications, making adjustments as necessary.

• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area, following all shop safety rules and guidelines.

• Collaborate with other welders and team members within the weld groups and bays to meet production goals.

• Properly use and care for personal protective equipment, including steel-toe footwear, weld helmet, and weld gloves.

Essential Skills

• Hands-on experience with MIG welding on mild steel, ideally in a production environment.

• Ability to perform .045 MIG welding in the flat position with consistent quality.

• Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints for fabrication and welding.

• Experience using hand and power tools in a welding or fabrication setting, including hammers and basic shop tools.

• Capability to perform basic fabrication tasks such as grinding, blasting, and band saw operation.

• Familiarity with Lincoln welders or similar welding equipment.

• Understanding of basic TIG welding principles and willingness to assist occasionally with TIG projects.

• Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality welds.

• Ability to work safely in a shop environment and follow established safety procedures.

• Reliable attendance and ability to work 1st shift hours from 6:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Technical school education in welding or a related field is a plus.

• Experience with fabrication and fitting work in a production or job-shop environment.

• Comfort working within structured weld groups and multiple welding bays.

• Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively with teammates.

• Interest in developing TIG welding skills and taking on more TIG projects over time.

• Openness to feedback and performance-based development, including merit-based reviews.

Work Environment

The facility is a very clean, organized, and modern fabrication shop with high ceilings and a structured layout that includes three weld groups and twelve welding bays. Approximately 55–60 employees work in the shop, fostering a collaborative and team-oriented environment. The standard schedule for this role is 1st shift, from 6:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., with a focus on a consistent five-day workweek; some employees work limited Saturday hours as part of a designated crew. The shop does not have air conditioning, so doors remain open during the summer and temperatures can become warm; to support employees, the company provides items such as Gatorade and ice cream during hot periods. You will work primarily with Lincoln welders and standard fabrication equipment, including grinders, blasting equipment, and band saws. The environment is tobacco-free, and the company emphasizes safety and comfort by requiring steel-toe footwear, a weld helmet, and weld gloves while providing a top-tier welding hood for your use.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Lake Mills, WI.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $28.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
