Access Technician

Job Description Access Technician – Regional Hunting Access Technician (Seasonal position). Approximate employment dates are mid‑July to mid‑January. Work schedule typically consists of four 10‑hour days, with weekends and holidays required. Housing is not provided. Responsibilities Assist with the implementation and coordination of regional hunting access programs. Collaborate with area landowners and department personnel to address recreational use compliance and disseminate information on public hunting opportunities. Support landowners in establishing, maintaining, and marking public hunting access sites, including boundaries, parking areas, and information stations. Collect and maintain access use data, document daily and seasonal use of hunting areas. Respond to inquiries from landowners and the public, providing information and guidance. Help resolve conflicts involving hunters and landowners. Create and disseminate programmatic materials and program information to hunters, landowners, and department personnel. Manage specialized permission systems where applicable, including issuing permissions and providing related information. Physical & Environmental Demands Frequent travel to remote areas across Southeast Montana. Work outdoors in all seasons, often in inclement weather. Use motorized vehicles, hike, and transport equipment over rugged terrain. Lift and carry 30–50 pounds regularly. Possibility of handling wildlife materials with associated health risks. Operates a 4x4 pickup truck and basic construction and GPS equipment. Qualifications Basic knowledge of Montana’s hunting heritage, principles, rules, and regulations. Ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally with diverse groups, including ranchers, farmers, biologists, game wardens, and hunters. Strong interpersonal skills and aptitude for building relationships with private landowners, the public, and partner agencies. Capacity to work independently with minimal daily supervision in remote settings. Proficiency in using GPS, maps, and other navigational tools to interpret administrative boundaries and travel routes. Education & Experience High School Diploma or equivalent. Preference for candidates with college coursework in Criminal Justice, Wildlife Management, or closely related fields, or with at least two years of applicable experience. Salary and Benefits Hourly salary: $21.11. Not eligible for telework. Benefits include paid leave, holidays, retirement plan, and health, dental, and life insurance for employees who exceed 1,040 hours in a calendar year.
