The Hospital Facility Management (FM) Department plays a critical role by providing essential infrastructure and operational support across 2.1 million square feet of the Palo Alto campus, home to a Level1 Trauma Center and a leading academic medical center. Director – Facilities Management The Director of Facility Management provides strategic and operational leadership to advance a safe, reliable, and healing environment of care. This role partners closely with Facilities Construction, Engineering, and clinical and operational leaders to ensure seamless coordination, proactive communication, and effective mitigation strategies that protect clinical operations and patient care continuity. Responsibilities Set vision for and lead the management of the Facilities Management department at the Palo Alto campus or the Property Facilities Management department at regional campuses. Oversee all operational aspects of property and facilities management, protecting, maintaining, and improving the value of the facilities. Ensure competency of all staff and lead hiring, development, and performance improvement activities. Participate in strategic planning for facility reconfiguration and changes. Direct and assure the efficient operation of day‑to‑day department activities. Apply tools and techniques to continually improve the patient, provider, and staff experience by providing and maintaining healthy, safe, and appealing environments. Develop and execute long‑range and annual strategic plans, budgets, business continuity plans, and ensure compliance. Develop and maintain department and enterprise policies and procedures, managing internal/external cross‑functional project teams. Facilitate effective communication among staff, physicians, patients, families, and ancillary departments. Build and grow business relationships with stakeholders and vendors. Coordinate and communicate work specifications, installations, and space management; architectural and engineering, planning and design; new construction and/or renovation; maintenance and operations management. Review project schedules to ensure achievement of milestones and objectives. Monitor compliance and report on variance using established escalation structure. Provide overall direction to ensure efficient, timely, and cost‑effective delivery of services, including furniture configuration and relocation, facility maintenance, groundskeeping, and event set‑up. Ensure all project activities comply with University and Hospital policies related to vendor contracts, procurement, accounting, and conflict of interest. Manage technical service contracts, including development, review, execution, performance assessment, and negotiation. Maintain continuous alignment with defined strategic business objectives in conjunction with leadership and Operations management. Lead the implementation of projects as assigned by managing leader. On‑call availability during non‑standard hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays, may be required. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in a work‑related discipline/field from an accredited college or university. Seven (7) years of progressively responsible and directly related work experience. Knowledge of project management methodologies to lead project teams; clear written communication. Working knowledge of The Joint Commission (TJC), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and Department of Health Care Access and Information (HCAI). Strong organizational and systematic work processes, with excellent communication and collaboration skills. Ability to delegate assignments and share decision‑making with team members. Strong leadership skills and ability to lead project teams with interpersonal effectiveness. Ability to develop, implement, and evaluate efficient and cost‑effective methods for construction, repair, and/or maintenance projects. Ability to establish strategic direction and business plans for a functional group. Ability to manage complex projects and resources (people, costs, time). Ability to plan, organize, and manage building operational services and preventative maintenance programs. Knowledge of regulations, procedures, and technical reference materials related to building maintenance. Knowledge of business practices for bid specification, negotiating agreements, and administering contracts. Knowledge of materials methods and principles used in maintenance of hospital, clinic, and office building installations and systems. Knowledge of principles and practices of organization, administration, fiscal, and personnel management. Physical Demands and Work Conditions Work requires frequent standing, walking, and performing desk‑based computer tasks. The job may be in an outdoor environment with possible exposure to extreme temperatures, noise, allergens, asbestos, and the use of protective equipment as required. Office duties will be performed in a lighted, heated, and ventilated environment. Occasional travel may be required. Base Pay Scale Generally starting at $83.98 – $111.27 per hour. The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to internal equity, experience, education, specialty, and training. This pay scale is not a promise of a particular wage.
