Administrator On Duty

The Administrator on Duty (AOD) is responsible for proactively coordinating patient admissions, discharges, and transfers to support efficient patient throughput throughout the hospital. This role provides operational leadership to ensure safe staffing levels, effective resource utilization, and high-quality patient care. The AOD serves as a key administrative resource for staff, patients, and families while providing interim leadership, crisis management, and administrative oversight as a representative of hospital administration. The position also ensures timely communication of critical patient, employee, and departmental information to appropriate internal and external stakeholders.

Responsibilities include overseeing and coordinating patient placement through effective management of the Admission, Discharge, and Transfer (ADT) process, demonstrating sound judgment and critical thinking to support patient care delivery while maximizing the efficient use of hospital resources and maintaining optimal patient flow, identifying issues affecting hospital operations and independently initiating corrective actions or engaging appropriate resources, monitoring and promoting a safe, efficient, and patient-centered environment that supports patient and family comfort, visitor safety, and staff effectiveness, utilizing research and evidence-based practice to support continuous improvement efforts, particularly related to capacity management and patient throughput, identifying opportunities for quality improvement, evaluating best practices, and actively supporting implementation of process enhancements, providing administrative leadership and support during routine operations and times of crisis, serving as the hospital's representative when addressing operational, patient, or staff concerns, building and maintaining productive working relationships through collaboration, mentorship, transparency, and positive communication, coaching and supporting staff in fostering a respectful, inclusive workplace culture while addressing issues related to workplace conflict, diversity, and employee well-being, demonstrating accountability through effective time management, professional conduct, and commitment to safe work practices, serving as a mentor and educator for nursing staff, nurse interns, students, graduate nurses, and experienced clinicians, acting as a role model by sharing expertise, promoting continuous education, and supporting staff development across departments, engaging staff and key stakeholders to achieve operational goals, improve patient outcomes, and enhance the overall patient experience, utilizing effective leadership and interpersonal skills to gain support for initiatives, manage change, and guide teams through challenging situations, promoting the profession and organization through participation in professional associations, advocacy efforts, and community engagement activities.

Qualifications include a Bachelor of Science (BS) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required, if the bachelor's degree is not in Nursing, a Master's degree or higher in Nursing is required, Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) and/or Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) preferred, minimum of three (3) years of clinical experience required, leadership experience preferred, must maintain a Solid Performer or higher rating on annual performance evaluations, current Registered Nurse (RN) licensure required.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances include current licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse in the state where the facility is located, or a multistate license recognized through the Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC), where applicable, Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification required within 30 days of hire, Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification preferred at time of hire and required within one (1) year of hire or transfer, Act 34 Criminal Background Clearance required.

Required Certifications/Licensure: Registered Nurse (RN), Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) within one year of hire or transfer, Act 34 Clearance.

Current licensure must be maintained in accordance with state requirements. Employees working under an out-of-state Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC) license who establish residency in the state where the facility is located must apply for licensure in that state within 60 days of establishing residency.
