Criminal Disqualifiers: Must not have pleaded guilty or been convicted of a felony offense. Must not have pleaded guilty of been convicted of a misdemeanor offense. Must not be the current subject of an administrative or internal affairs investigation. Important: A written exam, 1.5 mile run, and pre-psychological suitability assessment exam is required prior to the oral board/interview. Candidates have the option to purchase out-of-pocket a combo study guide and practice test for $28. Separately, the study guide is $21 and the practice test is $13. These study materials are not paid for by the Puyallup Tribe. To schedule the PST Written Exam: The Puyallup Tribe’s Police Officer position is listed on the PST website. You will be able to complete your application online and select the testing date (virtual testing requires video/camera) and/or location most convenient for you. If you are a previous applicant with PST and have completed a written exam within the last 6 months, you will be able to submit your score to the Puyallup Tribe’s position as an add-on. Pre-Psych SAR Exam: After a candidate has completed and passed the written exam and run, Human Resources will email instructions for scheduling the pre-psychological SAR examination. Notification and Response Process: After the application period ends, you will receive an email from our recruitment team. Please expect an email from an address ending in "puyalluptribe-nsn.gov." It is the candidate's responsibility to ensure a timely response. If a candidate cannot be contacted after three (3) contact attempts or approximately three (3) weeks, they will automatically be disqualified and may reapply after six (6) months. Position Summary: Responsible for the enforcement of all tribal laws and regulations which shall include both land and marine areas which are under tribal jurisdiction. The police officer should possess understanding of sovereignty, tribal regulations and the need for their enforcement. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Works in partnership to build positive relationships with the community and other agencies to solve law enforcement issues and to improve the quality of life for the Puyallup Tribe of Indians and its residents. Patrols an assigned area of the reservation in a patrol vehicle, a motorcycle, marine vessel or bicycle, during an assigned shift, to preserve law and order, to prevent and discover the commission of crimes, and to enforce civil regulations. Answers both emergency and non-emergency calls and complaints involving fire, traffic accidents, domestic situations, robberies and other misdemeanors, and other disturbances and answers felony calls and takes necessary police action. Conducts preliminary investigations at crime scenes and accidents, gathers evidence, locates and questions witnesses. Testifies as a witness in court. Interviews witnesses and/or complainants; collects material evidence and performs crime scene work; performs surveillance; apprehends, interviews, and arrests suspects; prepares and submits accurate reports and keeps detailed incident logs; assists other jurisdictions and agencies; participates in undercover investigations of narcotics, gambling, vice and other activities, violations and crimes; may be called on at any time for emergency duties. Maintains confidentiality so as to not jeopardize on-going cases. Must be able to quickly assess situations in accordance with operating rules, regulations and laws while considering the needs of the community in order to protect the health and safety of the public, other officers and himself/herself. May participate on special task forces as assigned by shift commander which may include school resource officer duties, gang resistance education and training to students, school staff and community. Performs hunting patrols and patrols of seasonal fireworks areas or other events/activities. May work marine or hunting patrols including ensuring that shellfish divers are in compliance with shellfish code through quarterly Urine Analysis. Performs other duties as assigned. Supervisory Responsibilities: This position has no supervisory responsibilities. Qualifications and Requirements: Education and/or Experience: High school diploma or general education degree (GED) is required. Licenses/ Certificates/Other: Entry Level Candidates: Must be able to complete the Washington State Training Commission Basic Academy, or Bureau of Indian Affairs Basic Police Training or other tribal/state approved basic academy within one year of hire. Must complete Washington State equivalency commission within one year of hire as a condition of employment. Must be able to obtain a commission through agencies in which the tribe has entered into Memorandums of Understanding/Agreement (MOU/MOA) for commissioning within the first year of employment, and maintain such cross commission during entire length of employment. Must complete a one-year probationary period with the Law Enforcement Department after successful completion of the Basic Law Enforcement Academy. Must successfully complete field training. Lateral Candidates: Must be currently certified as a police officer and have worked as a police officer during the past two years and have no break-in-service. Graduate of the Washington Training Commission Basic Academy or Bureau of Indian Affairs Basic Police Training or other tribal/state-approved basic academy. Must submit proof of Academy certification. Washington State Equivalency examination within one year of hire as a condition of employment. Must be able to obtain a cross-commission through Pierce County Sheriff’s Department within the first year of employment. Lateral candidates can be exempted from the written/physical agility test if Academy certified and have worked as an officer within the last two years. Lateral candidates must submit proof of Academy certification. All Candidates: Must have a valid state driver’s license and be insurable.
