Senior Center Assistant - Human Services Department

ABOUT THIS POSITION

The Human Services Department provides a comprehensive array of services to help residents of Phoenix achieve their highest level of self-sufficiency. Services and programs reach a diverse population ranging from preschool children participating in Head Start programs to older adults attending senior center activities. The Human Services Department (HSD) Senior Programs operates 15 senior centers throughout the city of Phoenix for adults ages 18 and older. Each center is dedicated to providing participants with a variety of leisure and recreational activities in a safe and supportive environment.

Eight of the 15 senior centers are co-located with the Parks and Recreation Department. In these sites, members may participate in Parks and Recreation programs in addition to the services available through the Human Services Department senior centers.

The Senior Center Assistant assists in managing the daily operations of City of Phoenix senior centers in the Human Services Department. The primary role of the Senior Center Assistant is to develop and implement a variety of social and recreational programs and activities for seniors and/or disabled adults. Additional duties include, but are not limited to, assisting with meals and supplemental food programs; training and supervising center volunteers; handling cash and daily deposits; preparing reports, providing positive customer service with internal and external customers, and ensuring that all city, county, state, and federal regulations are adhered to. Responsibilities require considerable contact with members of senior, disabled, minority, and poverty groups.

• Knowledge of cognitive and physical challenges facing aging adults, and persons with disabilities.
• Knowledge of senior center industry standards and best practices.

SALARY

Pay Range: $21.02 - $34.25 per hour.

Hiring Range: $21.02 - $28.17 per hour.

• Hiring range is an estimate of where you can receive an offer. The actual salary offer will carefully consider a wide range of factors, including your skills, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, training, and internal equity.

Internal Only: Please understand that this is pay grade 342. If selected, your salary offer will be based on the applicable promotion or demotion worksheet in accordance with the City Pay Ordinance.

• Promotions occur when the last two digits of the pay grade increase.
• Demotions occur when the last two digits of the pay grade decrease.
• Lateral transfers occur when there is no change to the last two digits of the pay grade.
• When there is a change in the first digit of the pay grade, there may also be a change to your classification or unit.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Two years of experience working with the public in the direct provision of social services,
• Supplemented by some college coursework in social work, sociology, or a related field.
• Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum qualifications may be substituted.
• All finalists for positions are subject to a criminal background check applicable to the department or position.
• This position requires the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:

• Two or more years of experience in/with:
  • Developing, planning, implementing, and evaluating programs for the elderly.
  • Programming and special event set-up, take down, and coordination in small and large group settings.
  • Professional experience working with older adults and/or disabled individuals in the direct provision of social services.
  • Group Facilitation.
• Experience in/with
  • Cognitive and physical challenges facing aging adults, and persons with disabilities.
  • Senior center industry standards and best practices.
  • Effectively communicating with the public in person and in writing.
  • Working with people living with mild to moderate dementia.
  • Providing quality customer service to internal and external customers.
  • Cash handling.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office.
• Fluent in Chinese or Spanish is desirable.
• Food handling experience and/or a current Maricopa County Food Service Worker card is desirable.
