Senior Director, Oncology Small Molecule

Merck's Discovery Oncology division seeks a Senior Director to lead small molecule therapeutic development at its Boston site. The role combines strategic pipeline oversight with scientific leadership, driving oncology programs from discovery through clinical development while managing a team of scientists.
Responsibilities
- Develop and execute pipeline strategy for oncology small molecule therapeutics at Boston site
- Provide strategic oversight for programs transitioning from discovery through late-stage clinical development
- Drive key milestones including candidate selection, IND-enabling studies, and early clinical support
- Lead business development evaluations and identify external assets aligned with strategic vision
- Mentor program leads and foster high-performance collaborative culture within discovery oncology team
Requirements
- Ph.D. in Biology, Oncology, Pharmacology, Biochemistry, or related STEM field with 10+ years post-degree industry experience
- Deep expertise in cancer biology and ability to translate insights into drug development strategies
- Proven track record advancing multiple small molecule candidates into clinical trials
- Direct experience with late-stage program leadership, IND writing, and regulatory interactions
- Demonstrated people management of senior and junior scientists with project leadership achievements
- Strong collaborative and communication skills across multidisciplinary teams
