This is a step-up Controller opportunity for a high-potential accounting leader ready to take full ownership of the books. The ideal candidate may be a Manager or Senior Manager nearing the end of their public accounting chapter, or an Assistant Controller or Accounting Manager ready to move into the top accounting role. A prior Controller title is not required. What matters is a strong technical foundation, disciplined execution, sound judgment, and the drive to build with a growing company. This is a hands-on role for someone who wants broader responsibility, direct access to the CFO, and the opportunity to grow as the business scales. You will own the close, general ledger, inventory accounting, internal controls, US GAAP compliance, internal reporting, and the accounting side of Sage. The CFO will be an active partner, and specialized external advisors will be available for complex tax and technical matters. What You'll Own Monthly close, general ledger, and tax coordination Own the monthly close end to end using a documented close calendar, clear task ownership, and sign-offs, with the goal of reaching a consistent 5-7 business day close. Own the general ledger and chart of accounts, including journal-entry standards, supporting documentation, account reconciliations, and posting discipline. Build a complete and consistent accrual process for freight, duties, rebates, commissions, bonuses, professional fees, and received-not-invoiced inventory. Coordinate with the external CPA firm and tax advisors on tax provisions, filings, and the tax calendar, maintaining a no-surprises environment. Inventory and landed-cost accounting Own inventory accounting for an import and distribution model, including in-transit inventory, landed-cost capitalization, cost layers, reserves, and cost-of-sales accuracy. Partner with warehouse operations on cycle counts and physical inventories, and reconcile perpetual inventory to physical results. Maintain practical methodologies for excess and obsolete inventory, shrink, and other inventory reserves. US GAAP, controls, and audit readiness Apply US GAAP to the company's core accounting areas, including revenue recognition, inventory, leases, returns, rebates, co-op programs, and warranty obligations. Document accounting policies and significant judgments, using the CFO and external advisors as resources when specialized guidance is needed. Strengthen controls appropriate for a scaling private company, including approvals, segregation of duties, journal-entry review, master-data changes, and ERP access. Keep reconciliations, policies, and audit support organized so the company remains ready for a financial statement review or audit. Internal reporting and Sage Produce the monthly internal reporting package, including GAAP financial statements, working-capital and inventory metrics, budget-to-actual results, and clear variance commentary. Prepare recurring lender reporting accurately and on time. Own Sage from the accounting side, including the chart of accounts, period close, GL, AP, AR, inventory modules, user roles, reporting, and data hygiene. Improve the finance infrastructure quarter by quarter through better reports, cleaner processes, automation, and stronger integration with warehouse and e-commerce data. Team leadership Lead and develop the accounting team, set clear standards for accuracy and deadlines, and build process depth so the function does not depend on any one person. Stay close to the work. This role leads through technical credibility, coaching, and personal follow-through rather than layers of delegation. What You Bring Required Approximately 5-7 years of progressive accounting experience. Strong profiles may include a public accounting Manager or Senior Manager, an Assistant Controller, or an Accounting Manager ready for broader ownership. A strong foundation in monthly close, general ledger accounting, balance-sheet reconciliations, financial statements, and audit-ready support. Solid US GAAP knowledge and the ability to research, form a view, document the conclusion, and know when to seek specialized advice. Meaningful exposure to inventory, manufacturing, importing, distribution, consumer products, or other product-based businesses, either through public accounting clients or an operating role. The ability and willingness to work in the details while also improving the process. High learning agility, urgency, ownership, and follow-through. You are comfortable building structure where it does not yet exist. Strongly preferred CPA license, CPA exam progress, or a clear path toward completion. Public accounting experience with Big Four, national, or strong regional firm clients in manufacturing, distribution, consumer products, retail, or e-commerce. Experience with landed cost, in-transit inventory, reserves, physical inventory, marketplace fees, customer deductions, returns, rebates, or co-op programs. Hands-on experience with Sage or another mid-market ERP, including close, reporting, and process improvement. Experience supporting a private-company financial statement audit or review.
