Phlebotomist

We are currently searching for a Phlebotomist to provide support to the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This is a full‑time, on‑site position based in Bethesda, MD, with a Monday through Friday schedule, 6:30AM to 3:00PM. Responsibilities Function as a Health Technician (Phlebotomist) in an active clinic, drawing samples for clinical testing and research protocols. Collaborate with doctors, head nurses, and other nursing staff; communicate to clarify blood‑draw requests, explain laboratory procedures, and resolve specimen issues. Draw blood specimens from outpatients and inpatients according to standard operating procedures and observe "Standard Precautions." Monitor patients for signs of anxiety or adverse reactions during venipuncture and report abnormal findings to nursing staff. Collect finger‑stick and other micro‑volume samples requiring specialized equipment and techniques. Process specimens by centrifugation, separate, measure volume, and aliquot according to SOPs. Follow safety guidelines for sharps disposal and patient isolation procedures. Perform complex accession routines, match tests to specimen tubes, and account for all orders. Identify and resolve specimen or order issues (e.g., unlabeled, mislabeled, insufficient quantity, wrong tube) and coordinate re‑collection with nursing units or physicians. Instruct patients on proper midstream, clean‑catch urine collection to prevent contamination. Participate in continuing education to maintain competency in all job duties. Contribute to quality‑assurance improvement projects, such as reviewing phlebotomy draw data versus nurse draws and tracking error rates. Train ancillary groups (e.g., medical students) involved in drawing research specimens. Collect and analyze data on outpatient clinic wait times from sign‑in to blood draw, and suggest improvements to reduce delays. Perform other related duties as assigned. Qualifications High school diploma and certification as a Phlebotomist (ASCP) or equivalent. Minimum of one (1) year of experience performing venipuncture and urine collection procedures. High skill level in venipuncture with complex patient orders and disease states. Experience with specimen processing. Strong oral and written communication skills. Excellent organizational and time‑management skills. Proficient computer skills. Must be able to obtain and maintain a Federal or DoD "public trust"; candidates must obtain approved adjudication prior to onboarding. Preferred Qualifications / Nice to Have Excellent hand‑eye coordination. Ability to lift 10–30 pounds. Active public trust or suitability. Salary Range: $49,000.00–$81,000.00 (total compensation depends on experience, skills, and other factors).
