Patient Access Professional - Casual

Job Summary Patient Access Professional at Methodist Women’s Hospital, 707 N. 190th Plaza – Elkhorn, NE. This casual, “as needed” position involves registering and dismissing patients, verifying demographic and insurance information, ensuring EMTALA compliance, and performing point‑of‑service collections. Responsibilities Greets patients professionally and utilizes triage guidelines to alert clinical team members of urgent situations. Follows EMTALA guidelines and the Code Triage Process when registering patients in the Emergency Department. Effectively deals with anxious or agitated patients and family members in a calm, professional manner. Verbal de‑escalates upset patients or families regarding situations, services, or requests. Performs registration and insurance verification accurately and in a timely manner, ensuring all demographic and payer information is correct. Collects patient identification information to create a “quick registration” and notifies the triage clinical team member of patient arrival and chief complaint. Collaborates with the clinical team to determine when the patient’s condition has stabilized to proceed to the bedside for complete registration. Collects and updates patient demographic information and photo IDs in the electronic registration record. Verifies insurance eligibility using electronic work queues, updates records, and scans insurance cards. Completes Medicare Secondary Payer questionnaire and other payer‑specific documents as required. Reviews and signs admission paperwork with the patient/patient representative. Utilizes translation services, as needed, to ensure accurate data collection. Provides patients or representatives copies of all signed documents. Advises patients of financial responsibility in a respectful manner and performs point‑of‑service collections according to policy. Communicates patient financial responsibility and reviews estimates and liability waivers. Documents collection attempts and reasons for any failed attempts, and meets or exceeds POS collection goals. Processes and manages payments/collections securely in accordance with policy. Notifies supervisor of any cash discrepancies in a timely manner. Recommends patients for Patient Financial Counselors as appropriate. Education High school diploma, GED, or equivalent; preferred. Experience Previous healthcare registration, customer service, insurance, or billing experience required. Medical terminology knowledge preferred. Licenses and Certifications Ability to provide transportation to other campus locations within a reasonable timeframe. American Heart Association or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS) preferred. Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities Phone etiquette and basic medical terminology. Strong computer skills, including Outlook, Word, Excel, scanner, and copier. Basic mathematics (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) for collections. Ability to work independently and collect data from patients for system entry. Multitasking with strong attention to detail in the registration process. Kind, courteous, and helpful demeanor toward patients and coworkers. Capability to manage crises and transport/escort patients or family members to appropriate locations. Physical Requirements Weight: Medium – can exert up to 50 pounds. Occasional lifting, carrying, and standing; frequent keyboard and typing actions. Rare walking, walking is frequent; occasional climbing, crawling, kneeling, and while balancing.
