COLLEGE INTERN II

Public Works seeks a college intern majoring in civil engineering to assist in various areas of the Development section of the Engineering Division. The candidate must be currently enrolled in college-level courses at an accredited college or university and provide transcripts or proof of enrollment prior to appointment. The position requires a minimum of 15 hours per week, year‑round. Work Conditions Part‑time, non‑permanent. Temporary/part‑time employment does not qualify for city benefits except those required by law. Enrollment in an alternative retirement program is mandatory, requiring an employee contribution of 7½% of base earnings to the Public Agency Retirement System (PARS). Employment may end with or without cause or advance notice. Responsibilities Assist supervisor and department staff with a variety of support duties as assigned. Research, compile, and analyze data. Prepare and process routine reports, correspondence, and records. Enter data to record and retrieve department information. Interact with interdepartmental staff and other agency representatives to obtain or provide data. Perform routine clerical tasks such as copying, filing, collating materials, and answering telephones. Conduct routine field reconnaissance and inspections as needed. Pickup and deliver documents, materials, supplies, etc., as required. Prepare plans and drawings under supervisor direction. Assist in plan review under supervisor direction. Assist residents and developers with permitting. Perform related duties as assigned. Qualifications Education: High school diploma or equivalent (GED) and current enrollment in civil engineering courses at an accredited college or university. Experience: General office, public contact, and/or government‑related experience is highly desirable. License: Valid California driver's license with an acceptable driving record at the time of appointment. Knowledge: Business English, spelling and grammar; modern office practices, procedures and equipment; personal computer operations; AutoCAD; Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Word and Excel; basic math principles; effective public relations/customer service principles, practices and techniques. Ability: Utilize general office equipment such as telephone, fax, printers, copiers, and computers; learn and apply city policies, procedures, rules and regulations; conduct research, compile and analyze data and prepare accurate reports and correspondence; reason logically, draw valid conclusions and make appropriate recommendations; maintain work effectiveness and meet deadlines with frequent changes in workload and priorities; understand and carry out oral and written instructions; communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; provide quality customer service. Special Conditions Employees regularly assigned or required to drive a city or personal vehicle for work may be required to participate in the DMV Employer Pull Notice program due to field duties that may require operation of a city vehicle.
