Description

American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN for a General Medicine PCU Step-down position requiring ventilator care experience and a VA or compact RN license.

Details

• Work in a hybrid General Medicine PCU unit consisting of 10 PCU beds and 2 ICU beds within a large acute care hospital
• Care for vent/trach dependent patients with common diagnoses including DKA, COPD, sepsis, suicide/overdose, chronic respiratory failure, and renal failure
• Two beds designated for chronic trach patients
• Typical patient ratio is 1:5 with a goal of 1:4
• Remote telemetry monitoring is used, with tele sitting implemented to increase Patient Care Tech coverage
• Epic charting system required
• Day shift schedule of 4x12 hours, 6:45am-7:15pm
• Weekend requirement of every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts in a 6-week scheduling block
• Floating required within skillset across PCU, DOU, IMC, and stepdown units
• Facility may call off 1 shift per 2 weeks
• Must work one holiday per 13-week contract, with 2 holidays required during winter holiday periods (Thanksgiving, Christmas/Christmas Eve, NYE/New Year's)

Requirements

• Active VA State or Compact RN license required (pending license accepted only for candidates holding a single-state license from a non-compact state)
• Current certifications: ACLS, BLS, and NIHSS
• Minimum 1 year of nursing experience required
• Prior experience with 1:5 patient ratios
• Epic charting experience required
• Teaching hospital experience preferred
• Level I Trauma Center experience preferred
• Previous charge nurse experience preferred
• Clinical skills required: cardiac monitoring, dysrhythmia interpretation and management, rapid response/code team activation, IV therapy, phlebotomy, blood product administration, central and peripheral line care, cardiac drip management (no titration), and respiratory support including nasal cannula, oxygen administration, and non-invasive airway management
• Ventilator care experience for chronic trach and vent patients required
• Two professional references required for consideration
• PDF copies of driver's license and Social Security card required for consideration

Additional Information

• Provide comprehensive care for vent/trach dependent and cardiac telemetry patients in a stepdown/PCU environment
• Work within a Level I Trauma Center, Magnet-designated, teaching hospital affiliated with a medical school
• This assignment is not recommended for first-time travelers
• Local candidates residing within 100 miles are not accepted, though limited exceptions may apply for those living 50-99.9 miles away for a single 13-week assignment with no extension eligibility, and those under 50 miles at a lower bill rate under the same conditions
• Previous employees (per diem or permanent) must have a minimum one-year gap before returning as a traveler
• Travelers who have worked 365 days on assignment are not eligible to return, regardless of separation period, though case-by-case exceptions may be reviewed by facility leadership
• All RTO, block, and special scheduling requests must be submitted upfront for consideration
