Position Summary

The Director of Development provides strategic leadership for Anew's fundraising and development efforts, building meaningful relationships with donors, foundations, corporations, community partners, and other stakeholders to advance Anew's mission and ensure long-term organizational sustainability.

Working closely with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Development Coordinator, and Board Development Committee, the Director develops and implements comprehensive fundraising strategies designed to increase revenue, strengthen donor engagement and retention, expand Anew's funding base, and position the organization for continued growth.

The Director will oversee a broad range of development activities, including individual giving, major gifts, foundation and corporate support, grant development, annual campaigns, special events, donor communications, planned giving, and long-term fundraising initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

Fundraising Strategy & Donor Development

• Develop, implement, and evaluate comprehensive annual and long-term fundraising strategies aligned with Anew's mission, strategic priorities, and financial goals.
• Develop strategies to increase donor acquisition, engagement, retention, and overall giving.
• Build and maintain strong, meaningful relationships with individual donors, major donors, corporations, foundations, and community partners.
• Conduct prospect research and identify new individual, corporate, and foundation funding opportunities.
• Develop and manage a portfolio of prospects and donors through cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.
• Work closely with the CEO to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward major donors and prospective major donors.
• Support the CEO and Board Development Committee in developing long-term fundraising strategies, including planned giving and the creation of an organizational endowment.
• Identify opportunities to engage Board members and other key stakeholders in donor cultivation, stewardship, and fundraising activities.

Annual Giving, Communications & Marketing

• Manage and execute annual fundraising campaigns, including direct mail, digital appeals, and other individual giving initiatives.
• Direct the development and production of annual direct mail appeals, newsletters, annual reports, donor communications, and other fundraising materials.
• Assist with the development of marketing materials, social media content, and other communications that increase awareness of Anew's mission, programs, and impact.
• Ensure fundraising and marketing communications adhere to Anew's branding guidelines and appropriately represent the organization and the experiences of survivors.
• Develop compelling and mission-centered communications that demonstrate the impact of donor support.

Grants & Institutional Giving

• Research and identify new public and private funding opportunities aligned with Anew's programs and strategic priorities.
• Write compelling grant proposals, letters of inquiry, and other funding requests.
• Maintain and oversee the Grants Calendar, ensuring timely submission of applications, reports, and other funder requirements.
• Monitor grant deadlines and reporting requirements and work collaboratively with appropriate Anew staff to ensure accurate and timely submissions.
• Maintain strong relationships with foundation and corporate funders through appropriate communication, stewardship, and reporting.

Donor Database & Development Operations

• Oversee the donor CRM/database in coordination with the Development Coordinator to ensure accurate donor records, timely tracking of donations, and appropriate gift acknowledgements.
• Oversee gift processing, donor acknowledgement, reporting, and stewardship systems in collaboration with the CEO and Development Coordinator.
• Monitor fundraising performance and analyze results to evaluate effectiveness and recommend improvements.
• Establish and maintain development policies, procedures, and practices that support effective fundraising operations and donor stewardship.
• Ensure donor information is handled with appropriate confidentiality and discretion.

Events & Community Engagement

• Assist with the development and implementation of new fundraising opportunities and events.
• Oversee Anew's annual gala, including fundraising strategy, sponsorship development, donor engagement, and coordination with staff and community partners.
• Support other fundraising events, local community fundraisers, and special events designed to engage donors, volunteers, and community stakeholders.
• Represent Anew at networking events, community activities, and other opportunities that increase awareness of the organization and strengthen community relationships.

Leadership & Collaboration

• Work collaboratively with the CEO, Development Coordinator, Board Development Committee, and other Anew staff to advance organizational fundraising goals.
• Contribute to a positive, mission-driven organizational culture and promote teamwork across departments.
• Develop and maintain development policies, procedures, and practices consistent with Anew's values and Client Services Manual, particularly regarding confidentiality, donor relations, survivor stories, and the appropriate use of volunteers.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in nonprofit management, communications, marketing, business, or a related field, with a minimum of five years of progressive nonprofit fundraising and/or development experience.
• Demonstrated experience developing and implementing successful fundraising strategies.
• Experience managing donor databases/CRM systems; experience with Charity Engine is a plus.
• Experience with individual giving, donor cultivation and stewardship, grants, and fundraising events.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to develop compelling donor communications and funding proposals.
• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build authentic, long-term relationships with donors, funders, community partners, Board members, and colleagues.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, project management, organizational, and time-management skills.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and projects while meeting deadlines.
• Ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment, and apply critical thinking skills.
• Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion.
• Understanding of nonprofit budgeting and financial practices preferred.
• Commitment to Anew's mission and the ability to work respectfully with survivors of domestic violence and their families.

Additional Requirements

Must complete Anew's required 40-hour domestic violence training.
Some evening and weekend hours are required, particularly in connection with fundraising and community events; flexibility in scheduling is necessary.
Ability to represent Anew professionally at community, networking, and fundraising events.
Ability to work effectively as part of a collaborative team.
