Position Overview The Cognitive Science Program at the University of California, Berkeley invites applicants to enter a pool of qualified temporary instructors to teach Cognitive Science 1 and upper‑division courses on Cognitive Psychology, Computational Modeling, Language and Cognition, Cognitive Neuroscience, and cognition‑related social sciences, and possibly other undergraduate courses in the Cognitive Science Program if an opening arises. Salary range: Minimum pay set by UC academic salary scales; estimate $70,977 – $101,198. See salary scale table: Percent time: 8% to 100% during the academic year; summer appointments handled by agreement. Anticipated start: Beginning of the semester (mid‑January for Spring, mid‑August for Fall). Summer appointments begin late May to early August. UC Berkeley calendar: Review timeline: Fall semester reviews in April/May, spring courses in October/November, summer courses in March/April. Open positions may be available as needs arise; pool does not guarantee a position. Position duration: Semesters or Summer Sessions; temporary appointments with no guarantee of reappointment at the end of the term. Position Description Responsibilities include undergraduate and graduate teaching. Additional duties may include holding office hours, assigning grades, advising students, preparing course materials (e.g., syllabus), writing exams, and managing GSIs. Qualifications Basic qualifications (required at time of application): PhD (or equivalent international degree), or enrollment in a PhD or equivalent program at time of application. Additional qualifications (required at time of start): A PhD (or equivalent international degree). Preferred qualifications: Commitment to and experience with undergraduate teaching, preferably in Cognitive Science, Linguistics, Computer Science, Philosophy, Psychology, or Neuroscience. Ability to teach effectively in a dynamic learning environment. Experience with and deep knowledge of interdisciplinary inquiry and research related to the study of the mind.
