Please Note: Vacancies will be filled as Fleet Mechanic Trainee, Fleet Mechanic I or Fleet Mechanic II. The salary range reflects the potential earnings for this position, with experienced tenured employees earning toward the higher end of the range. Most new hires, especially those without extensive experience, will start near the entry-level pay range. Candidates with significant comparable experience in the field may start just below the midpoint.
JOB SUMMARY
Fleet Mechanic Trainee performs entry-level maintenance and repair tasks on light, medium, and heavy-duty trucks and related equipment. Primary focus is preventive maintenance (PM), inspections, tire service, and assisting higher-level mechanics. Works under close supervision; work is reviewed in progress and upon completion. This classification is preparatory for progression to Fleet Mechanic I. Fleet Mechanic I performs journey-level maintenance and repair on automotive vehicles and equipment. Diagnoses and repairs standard mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical issues; average to considerable difficulty on light, medium, and heavy-duty trucks and specialized equipment, including diagnosis and repair of brake, steering/suspension, hydraulic, electrical, and HVAC systems. Performs advanced preventive maintenance (PM) services, road calls, and field repairs. Works under general supervision and exercises independent judgment on routine problems, and mentors Trainees. Fleet Mechanic II performs advanced diagnostics, repairs, and troubleshooting on complex mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, electronic, and integrated vehicle systems. Serves as the technical lead and escalation point for complex repairs, road calls, and unresolved equipment issues. Works independently under general supervision while providing technical guidance to lower-level mechanics. Fleet Mechanic Trainee Essential Functions Perform preventive maintenance services (10/15/25 intervals), lubrication, and safety inspections using established checklists. Check, top off, and replace fluids; replace wiper blades, bulbs, belts, and hoses as directed. Mount, dismount, repair, rotate, and balance tires. Remove and replace basic bolt-on components (e.g., batteries, alternators, starters, radiators, water pumps) under supervision. Assist with brake relines and adjustments. Assist with hydraulic hose replacement and perform visual leak checks; report findings. Use diagnostic tools at a basic level to retrieve and document fault codes; elevate diagnosis. Perform mobile PM services on ECUA property; complete inspection documentation accurately. Transport parts and maintain tools, equipment, and a clean work area. Support road calls by transporting tools/parts; no independent diagnostics or repairs. Perform other duties as assigned consistent with this classification. Fleet Mechanic I Essential Functions Perform full preventive maintenance (PM) services and condition-based inspections; identify and correct faults beyond Trainee scope. Diagnose and repair brake systems (air and hydraulic), including components such as calipers, chambers, S-cams, and valves; perform ABS diagnostics and standard system troubleshooting. Diagnose and repair steering and suspension systems (linkages, bushings, springs, shocks); perform alignments if equipment is available. Service and repair hydraulic systems, including PTOs, pumps, cylinders, valves, and hose fabrication; set and verify system pressures. Troubleshoot and repair 12/24V electrical systems using wiring diagrams; repair harnesses, connectors, and charging/starting systems. Perform A/C service and repair in compliance with EPA 609 standards. Use OEM and aftermarket diagnostic software and tools to retrieve data, perform guided diagnostics, and verify repairs. Perform road calls and field repairs independently; recover equipment safely. Execute component removal and replacement (R&R) on engines, transmissions, and axles, including clutches, hubs, bearings, radiators, coolers, and related components. Assist with CNG fuel system inspections and leak detection as trained. Prepare accurate work orders, parts lists, and inspection documentation; ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, and ECUA standards. Mentor and assist Trainees with basic tasks and documentation. Maintain a safe and clean work environment Perform other duties as assigned consistent with this classification. Fleet Mechanic II Essential Functions Diagnose and repair complex and multi-system failures across mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, HVAC, and integrated vehicle systems, including cascading or interrelated faults. Perform advanced diagnostics on ABS systems, CAN/J1939 networks, multiplexed systems, and intermittent electrical faults requiring root cause analysis beyond component-level repair. Identify systemic and recurring automotive failures and recommend corrective actions to reduce downtime and improve reliability. Lead major repair operations, including engines, transmissions, axles, and integrated driveline systems; verify critical repairs performed by others prior to return to service. Troubleshoot and resolve intermittent, multi-cause, and system-wide failures that exceed standard diagnostic procedures. Serve as lead technician on road calls, including complex field diagnostics, on-site decision-making, and coordination of equipment recovery, towing, or service continuation decisions. Perform and provide final technical oversight of CNG system inspections, leak detection, and safety compliance; determine serviceability status of CNG-equipped vehicles. Review and validate work orders, repair documentation, and inspection reports for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with ECUA standards. Ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, COMPANY, and applicable safety and environmental regulations; identify and elevate compliance risks. Provide technical leadership and mentoring to Mechanic I and Trainee personnel, including diagnostic coaching and repair best practices. Analyze maintenance trends and support development of preventive maintenance strategies and corrective action plans. Perform other duties as assigned consistent with this classification. Fleet Mechanic Trainee Requirements High school diploma or equivalent. Basic mechanical aptitude through education, training, or experience. Vocational/technical training or ASE student certification preferred. Experience with alternative fuel systems (e.g., CNG) preferred. Fleet Mechanic Trainee Licenses & Certifications Must possess a valid driver’s license. Must possess a valid Class A Commercial Driver License (CDL) with Tanker and Hazmat* endorsements or obtain a CDL permit within four (4) months of hire and the required Class A CDL Driver’s License with endorsements within eleven (11) months of hire. ECUA will provide Hazmat training as available. Fleet Mechanic I Requirements High school diploma or equivalent. Minimum 2 years of relevant automotive maintenance experience on light/medium/heavy trucks OR completion of an accredited program with OJT. Experience with sanitation/refuse hydraulics, lifter/packer systems, and/or CNG is desirable. Fleet Mechanic I Licenses & Certifications Must possess a valid Class A Commercial Driver License (CDL) with Tanker and Hazmat endorsements or obtain a CDL permit within four (4) months of hire and the required Class A CDL Driver’s License with endorsements within eleven (11) months of hire. ECUA will provide Hazmat training as available. Must possess and maintain at least one ECUA-approved ASE certification from the following categories as a condition of continued employment. The certification(s) must remain current and in good standing throughout employment. ECUA-Approved ASE certifications include: A1–A8 (Automobile Series), or T2–T8 (Medium/Heavy Truck Series), or F1 (Alternate Fuels) Current employees will have 12 months to attain their ASE’s. Must obtain EPA 609 certification within 90 days. This certification is required to work on A/C systems. Forklift lift certification as assigned. Fleet Mechanic II Requirements High school diploma or equivalent. Minimum of five (5) years (10,400 hours) of progressively responsible automotive maintenance experience on light, medium, and/or heavy-duty equipment. Demonstrated experience diagnosing and repairing complex mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and electronic vehicle systems. Fleet Mechanic II Licenses & Certifications Must possess a valid Class A Commercial Driver License (CDL) with Tanker and Hazmat endorsements or obtain a CDL permit within four (4) months of hire and the required Class A CDL Driver’s License with endorsements within eleven (11) months of hire. ECUA will provide Hazmat training as available. Must possess three (3) ECUA-approved ASE certifications at the time of hire or obtain the required certifications within ten (10) months of employment. The required certifications must meet the following criteria: At least two (2) certifications must be from the same ASE series; A1–A8 (Automobile Series), or T2–T8 (Medium/Heavy Truck Series), The third certification may be from the same ASE series or may be the F1 Alternate Fuels certification. All required ASE certifications must remain current and in good standing as a condition of continued employment. Must obtain and maintain EPA 609 certification within ninety (90) days of employment. EPA 609 certification is required prior to performing service, repair, or maintenance activities on motor vehicle air conditioning systems Must obtain and maintain applicable manufacturer certifications required to perform in-house warranty repairs and services Must obtain and maintain CNG certification within twelve (12) months of employment, or within the timeframe established by ECUA based on training availability and operational requirements.- Employees assigned to the Ellyson location must possess and maintain a valid Class A CDL with Tanker and Hazmat endorsements as a condition of assignment.
