Founded by philanthropist Alice Walton in 2005, the museum opened in 2011 and is a public, non-profit charitable organization with free admission. In June 2026, Crystal Bridges’ 114,000 square foot expansion opened to the public, allowing the museum to expand access for all. Position Summary The Senior Art Director is a highly strategic and operationally sophisticated creative leader who helps lead the vision, performance, and evolution of the creative function for Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art and the Momentary. This role ensures that marketing campaigns are visually compelling, on-brand, strategically aligned, operationally efficient, and scalable across a complex, multi-channel environment. The Senior Art Director supports the Head of Creative Services and the organization’s overall creative marketing strategy, partnering closely as the strategy evolves alongside institutional priorities. As a senior leader within Marketing and Communications, the Senior Art Director helps shape creative strategy, production, team structure, and partnerships to support ambitious institutional goals, serving as a key partner to cross-functional leadership in elevating brand expression, driving attendance and engagement, and strengthening organizational effectiveness. Success in this role requires the ability to operate at both strategic and executional levels, provide strong creative and team leadership, build effective cross-functional partnerships, and establish scalable creative standards and systems. The Senior Art Director helps ensure creative work elevates brand perception and audience engagement, campaigns contribute to attendance, membership, and institutional goals, and creative operations and teams operate with efficiency, clarity, alignment, and a commitment to continuous improvement. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Creative Vision and Brand Leadership Shape and elevate the creative vision for Crystal Bridges and the Momentary across marketing and communications. Maintain brand clarity and differentiation between institutions while supporting a cohesive portfolio strategy. Guide creative direction and campaign narratives for exhibitions, programs, and institutional initiatives. Uphold creative standards that reflect excellence, accessibility, and innovation. Advise on brand expression, storytelling, and audience engagement. Creative Operations Help design and continuously improve creative workflows, systems, and production models. Contribute to team structure, capabilities, organizational design, and process improvements that support efficiency and quality. Provide art direction and support the development of the design team. Help establish intake, prioritization, and resourcing approaches aligned with institutional priorities, balancing internal and external talent as appropriate. Support adoption of tools and standards that enable scalable creative execution. Manage a network of external creative partners, agencies, and freelancers. Integrated Campaign Execution Oversee development and delivery of multi-channel marketing campaigns spanning digital, social, email, web, print, environmental, video, and motion/immersive content. Ensure campaigns are delivered on time, on brand, and to a high standard of craft. Partner with project management, strategy, and program teams to prioritize and execute high-impact work. Maintain quality control across deliverables. Cross-Functional Leadership and Partnership Collaborate with leaders across the organization to align creative output with institutional goals. Support campaign planning and integration across departments. Help establish frameworks for content collaboration, rights management, and campaign coordination. Serve as a connector across functions to enable smoother workflows. Performance and Continuous Improvement Help define success metrics that link creative output to marketing and organizational outcomes. Support campaign reporting and post-mortem processes to capture learnings. Monitor operational performance and contribute to ongoing improvements. Foster a culture of accountability and continuous optimization. Team Leadership Establish clear expectations, priorities, and accountability measures to support effective team performance and achievement of departmental goals. Lead, coach, and develop a high-performing team fostering a culture of excellence, accountability, collaboration, and growth. Promote continuous improvement, professional development, and collaboration within the assigned team to drive results and support organization priorities. Support recruitment, onboarding, and training of new team members to ensure alignment with organization standards and practices. Monitor and manage team performance, addressing attendance, conduct, or productivity issues promptly and professionally. Encourage employee engagement and morale through recognition and open communication practices. Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned to support evolving organizational needs. Qualifications and Requirements Education and Experience Bachelor’s degree in graphic design, visual communications, marketing, advertising, fine arts, or a related field required. 7–9+ years of professional experience in creative services, marketing, brand leadership, or related fields. 5+ years of progressive leadership experience leading and developing teams, including direct responsibility for staff supervision, performance management, coaching, and professional development. Experience leading creative strategy and execution for integrated, multi-channel campaigns. Experience building or supporting creative operations, workflows, and production systems. Experience working with agencies, vendors, and external creative partners. Experience in arts and culture, hospitality, or mission-driven organizations preferred. Background in creative direction, brand strategy, or design leadership preferred. Experience scaling creative teams or functions in a growing organization preferred. Skills and Abilities Advanced proficiency with industry-standard creative and design software, including Adobe Creative Cloud applications. Strong understanding of design principles, typography, visual identity, brand systems, and multi-channel creative production. Hands-on design skills and the ability to produce creative output when needed. Knowledge of creative production requirements across digital, social, web, print, environmental, video, and motion content. Ability to operate at both strategic and executional levels in a fast-paced environment. Familiarity with accessibility standards and their application to creative and digital content preferred. Familiarity with project management and digital asset management tools preferred. Familiarity with budget management preferred. Work Environment Work is performed on-site (Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.) in a professional, climate-controlled office environment within a museum setting with standard office equipment, including computers, printers, and telephones. This role requires working in an open setting near colleagues. The noise level is typically low to moderate. The role also requires regular interaction with both the public and internal team members in a professional and courteous manner. Some local travel will be required, and a flexible schedule may be necessary to accommodate business needs, including occasional evening and weekend work hours.
