Qualifications:

• Knowledge of traffic regulations.
• Physical strength and agility sufficient to work and stand out of doors in inclement weather.
• Possess a valid Connecticut driver's license.
• Must be able to pass a job related physical examination on an annual basis.
• Ability to exercise judgment and be alert to detect possible dangers.
• Ability and willingness to work in the open and under varying climatic conditions.
• Ability to work with children and the general public.
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Title: School Crossing Guard

Reports To: Southington Police Department and Director of Operations, Southington Public Schools

Job Goal: Safeguarding the passage of school children across heavily travelled streets. This involves the responsibility for protecting the lives of school children crossing at designated traffic locations throughout the Town of Southington. Work will be scheduled to cover periods in the morning; noon and afternoon when school children are normally traveling to and from school. Guards protect the children in crosswalks. School crossing guards work is normally performed independently; however at times may have general supervision of a police officer.

Performance Responsibilities/Procedures:

• All guards will be on the side of the street the children are coming from.
• There will be no sitting in cars when children are in the area.
• Children are to be on the sidewalk or curb until all vehicle traffic has come to a complete stop.
• Walk with children across heavily travelled streets or stop traffic to allow safe passage of children.
• Use authorized signals to regulate vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
• Note all violations and traffic hazards and report them to appropriate police supervisor.
• Perform any related work as required.

Terms of Employment: Ten month work year; working conditions established by the Southington Board of Education. This is a non-union position.
