Sterile Processing Technician – Job Description

Overview

The Sterile Processing Technician is responsible for the decontamination, inspection, assembly, sterilization, and distribution of surgical instruments and medical equipment. This role plays a critical part in supporting patient safety by ensuring all instruments are properly cleaned and sterilized according to regulatory and hospital standards.

Key Responsibilities

• Decontaminate, clean, and disinfect surgical instruments and medical equipment
• Inspect, assemble, and package instrument trays according to procedure specifications
• Operate sterilization equipment (steam autoclaves, low-temp sterilizers, etc.)
• Monitor and document sterilization processes, ensuring compliance with infection control standards
• Maintain accurate records and tracking of instruments through sterilization cycles
• Ensure proper storage and distribution of sterile supplies to clinical departments
• Identify and report damaged or malfunctioning equipment
• Follow all hospital policies, AAMI standards, and regulatory guidelines

Required Skills

• Sterile Processing / Central Service experience
• Knowledge of surgical instruments and tray assembly
• Understanding of infection control and sterilization techniques
• Attention to detail and quality assurance
• Ability to work in a fast-paced healthcare environment

• Strong organizational and time management skills
• Ability to prioritize workload and meet deadlines
• Team-oriented with strong communication skills
• High level of accuracy and accountability
• CRCST or CBSPD certification preferred (or willingness to obtain)

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract position based out of Sacramento, CA.

The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $30.00/hr.
