Job Description The Office of Legal Affairs (OLA) provides legal advice to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) leadership and staff. The Attorney III assists in implementing litigation prevention strategies, offers practical solutions to legal issues, resolves disputes, and advocates for CDCR’s mission across a range of areas including healthcare, public contracting, accounting services, construction management, facilities planning, class action lawsuits, and policy development. Responsibilities Assist the Assistant General Counsel with litigation prevention and risk mitigation for CDCR and its employees. Provide legal, technical, and administrative advice on complex and sensitive matters involving incarcerated people, supervised people, employees, public procurement, contracts, public entities, unions, and the public. Offer legal counsel on protocols and methodologies designed to manage liability exposure. Collaborate with CDCR internal units and outside agencies such as the Department of General Services, Department of Finance, Office of the Attorney General, State Compensation Insurance Fund, and the Governor’s Office. Represent CDCR before administrative bodies including the State Personnel Board, Office of Administrative Hearings, State Public Works Board, Workers’ Compensation Appeals Board, and others. Working Conditions Office located in Sacramento, 95827. Mandatory on‑site presence required, with optional hybrid telework for employees who can perform essential functions independently. California residents only. The position provides a laptop and cell phone. Complimentary parking is available. Minimum Requirements Active membership in the California State Bar. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with diverse internal and external stakeholders. Experience representing an organization before administrative or regulatory bodies. Ability to provide clear legal advice to non‑attorney clients. Desirable Qualifications Experience providing legal counsel on labor and employment issues. Experience providing legal counsel to public entities. Experience litigating or managing litigation in state and federal court. Strong written and oral communication skills.
