Academic Advisor

The McKay School of Education is seeking an Academic Advisor to guide students through their academic journeys from program exploration and application through graduation, licensure, and career planning. In this role, you will provide individualized and group advising, help students understand degree and licensure requirements, coordinate field experiences, and collaborate with faculty, staff, school partners, and university offices to support student success. This position directly advances BYU's mission by helping future educators and communication disorders professionals prepare for meaningful service and professional work.

What you'll do in this position:

• Provide comprehensive academic advising on majors, program applications, degree planning, course sequencing, registration, graduation requirements, experiential learning, graduate school, and career pathways.
• Evaluate student records and explain program requirements, admission criteria, transfer credit, curriculum exceptions, and licensure requirements.
• Develop individualized education plans and academic improvement strategies to help students overcome barriers and progress toward graduation.
• Coordinate student teaching, internship, clinical, and other field placements with partner districts and clinics.
• Review student progress, clear qualified students for graduation, and recommend eligible graduates for teacher licensure through the Utah State Board of Education.
• Collaborate with faculty, university offices, school partners, and state personnel to resolve student-program issues and improve the student experience.

What qualifies you for this role:

Required

• A firm commitment to the mission of BYU.
• Bachelor's degree.
• Previous teaching experience as a licensed educator, counselor, or speech-language clinician.
• Exceptional written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
• Comprehensive knowledge of FERPA regulations and a commitment to maintaining confidentiality.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, Google Workspace applications, and Adobe Creative Cloud.
• Ability to quickly learn, interpret, and communicate complex information.
• Ability to work independently while contributing effectively in a collaborative team environment.
• Meticulous attention to detail, strong organization and time-management skills, and excellent problem-solving, critical-thinking, and conflict-resolution abilities.

Preferred

• Master's degree.
• Academic advising certification and three years of college advising experience.
• Knowledge of Utah State Board Rule Section 301-306, Utah teacher licensing policies and procedures, and Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) standards.
• Knowledge of American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) guidelines and certifications.
• Knowledge of career strategies for education and communication disorders, and membership in NACADA and/or ASHA.

Pay Grade: 51

Typical Starting Pay: $59,500.00 to $77,000.00 annually
