Police Officer (LATERAL)

This posting is for lateral applicants who have a minimum of two years of continuous experience without a break in service. This means you need to be currently employed as a police officer. OPOTA (or equivalent) Certified officers who are not employed as a police officer or candidates who need to complete an OPOTA academy are required to fill out the entry-level application located at The Grandview Heights Division of Police is accepting applications for an eligibility list for the position of Police Officer. Eligibility Lists, upon approval of the Grandview Heights Civil Service Commission, are valid for a period of one (1) year. The Grandview Heights Division of Police services the City of Grandview Heights and the Village of Marble Cliff and approximately 8,900 residents. The authorized staffing includes twenty-four sworn law enforcement officers and nine civilian staff and support members, including positions in Police Administration, Patrol, Investigations, Communications, Canine Handler, Bicycle Patrol, and Task Force Officer(s). The Division recently transitioned to twelve‑hour shifts, guaranteeing members every other weekend off. Essential Functions Operate a police vehicle in an assigned area of the City to maintain law and order Respond to calls for emergency and citizen complaints Interview witnesses, interview victims or suspects, and appear in court Investigate criminal and traffic offenses, direct traffic, and partake in crowd control Deliver subpoenas, transport prisoners as directed, and receive and dispatch radio messages Attend formal training classes and staff conferences Prepare daily and special reports of police matters encountered on the shift Work irregular, on‑call, and/or emergency hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays Maintain licenses and certifications as required, demonstrate regular and predictable attendance, and meet all job safety requirements and applicable OSHA safety standards Equipment Used Motor vehicle, Police cruiser, Bicycle Specialized law enforcement equipment, including firearms, two‑way radio, and vehicle computer Standard office equipment such as computer, telephone, fax machine, duplicating equipment, and standard‑issue protective gear Physical Requirements and Working Environment Work for prolonged periods of time on foot or in a vehicle; chase or restrain individuals as needed Perform routine peace‑keeping functions, walk, stand, sit, run, stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, twist, climb, and balance Push, pull, lift, and carry light to moderate weights and occasionally moderate to heavy weights Operate vehicles, firearms, and specialized law enforcement tools in varied weather conditions Provide first aid and manage high‑stress situations with calm and rational response May be exposed to toxic materials, bloodborne pathogens, and other infectious environments Education and Experience High school diploma or equivalent Successfully complete prescribed police officer certification training and one year of work probation Participate in and be selected through a competitive examination process as set forth in Civil Service Commission procedures Hold a valid State of Ohio motor vehicle operator’s license at time of appointment Possess knowledge of the operation of police equipment, weapons training, and relevant certifications Qualifications Knowledge of law enforcement theory, principles, practices, and application to municipal services Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations, including search and seizure, arrests, and custody Knowledge of methods and techniques for crime prevention, investigation, patrol, traffic control, records management, and self‑defense Understanding of the rules and regulations of the police organization Skill In Conducting criminal, traffic, and special investigations Interviewing witnesses, victims, or suspects Using firearms and modern police equipment Understanding, interpreting, applying, enforcing, and making decisions in accordance with applicable policies, laws, and regulations Physical agility and quick thinking in a variety of situations Ability To Perform a wide range of law enforcement assignments and think clearly and act promptly Operate specialized law enforcement equipment, including police vehicles, radios, video systems, and radars Gather, assemble, analyze, evaluate, and use facts and evidence Analyze crime and service patterns to develop effective tactical responses Administer first aid Develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, City officials, and the general public Meet age requirements established by the Civil Service Commission, write and speak effectively, and maintain records and prepare reports Salary Information (Shift Differential) is available; please consult the official city salary grid for detailed step levels.
