Job Summary
The Assistant Store Manager supports the Store Manager in executing daily store operations and ensuring smooth, consistent performance on the sales floor within a resale retail environment specializing in secondhand merchandise. This role serves as an execution-focused leader, responsible for translating store policies, operational standards, and merchandising direction into effective day-to-day action.
The Assistant Store Manager plays a key role in staff supervision, shift coordination, merchandising execution, and customer service. When the Store Manager is absent, this position acts as the Acting Store Manager, making operational decisions within predefined guidelines and escalating important matters as needed.

Role & Responsibilities
Store Operations Execution

• Execute daily store operations in alignment with Store Manager direction and company standards
• Manage shift operations, task assignments, and on-floor coordinatio
• Ensure operational rules and procedures are properly implemented on the sales floor

Merchandising & Sales Floor Execution

• Maintain and improve sales floor presentation based on established merchandising guidelines
• Implement floor changes, layout adjustments, and product movement as directed
• Monitor inventory and backroom conditions and coordinate adjustments as needed

Staff Supervision & Development

• Provide daily direction and support to Sales Associates
• Conduct on-the-job training (OJT) and coaching to ensure service and operational quality
• Support staff scheduling and shift coverage (final decisions remain with Store Manager)

Acting Store Manager Responsibilities

• Serve as the on-duty store lead when the Store Manager is not present
• Handle routine operational decisions, customer issues, and initial incident response
• Report and escalate important matters to the Store Manager in a timely manner

Customer Service & Issue Handling

• Handle customer service, returns, and complaint resolution at the first level
• Respond calmly and professionally to in-store issues or incidents

Compliance & Loss Prevention

• Follow pricing rules, appraisal standards, and operational guidelines
• Support theft prevention and loss control efforts on the sales floor
• Maintain a safe work environment through consistent enforcement of safety rules, hazard prevention, and employee safety training.

Other Duties

• Perform additional responsibilities as assigned based on business needs

Minimum Requirements

• Associate degree preferred, or equivalent combination of education and work experience
• 1–3 years of experience in retail store operations, including leadership or supervisory responsibilities
• Strong communication skills with the ability to provide clear instructions and on-the-job training to Sales Associates
• Solid understanding of daily retail operations, including shift execution, task coordination, customer service, and POS systems
• Ability to handle customer service matters, returns, and first-level complaint resolution
• Ability to make decisions in accordance with pricing rules, appraisal standards, and internal guidelines
• Basic computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office and retail POS or inventory management systems
• Strong compliance mindset, including adherence to operational procedures and company policies

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience as a retail floor leader, key holder, or supervisor
• Knowledge of reuse, apparel, or thrift retail
• Understanding of loss prevention and theft prevention practices
• Japanese language ability preferred but not required
• Experience working in new store openings or startup retail environments
• Approachable, communicative, and positive attitude
• Service-oriented mindset with strong sense of ownership and reliability
• Flexible and adaptable to changing priorities in a fast-paced environment

Work Environment

• Work is performed in a retail store environment, including the sales floor, backroom, stockroom, and receiving areas
• Responsibilities include opening and closing the store, which may involve alarm systems, security procedures, and facility walkthroughs
• Work schedule may include early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays based on business needs
• Must be able to respond promptly to operational issues, customer incidents, or safety concerns as they arise in the store environment

Additional eligibility qualifications

• Legally authorized to work in the United States

Physical Demands

• Stand and walk for extended periods (typically 6–8 hours per shift)
• Lift, carry, push, and pull merchandise or equipment weighing up to 30–45 lbs regularly, and up to 50 lbs with assistance
• Bend, kneel, reach, squat, and climb step stools or ladders as needed for merchandising and store operations
• Perform repetitive tasks such as pricing, folding, tagging, and handling merchandise
• Safely use standard retail tools and equipment, including box cutters and tagging devices
• Perform store opening and closing procedures, including security checks and alarm systems when assigned
• Respond promptly to operational, customer, or safety-related incidents
• Move and adjust retail fixtures such as racks or shelving when necessary
• Work in a resale retail environment that may involve exposure to dust, cleaning products, or allergens associated with previously owned merchandise
